In my head right now, building garage Sept 2019
Got the land, now starting to build. First off will be 40x60 garage/barn with small in-law apartment, planning to build that this summer, and then house next year.

Been perusing this site for past week and gotten a lot of information from everyone, thanks for that! But I have some questions for you experts regarding the best layout of the garage.

First question --- how much space will I need for a floor mounted 2 post lift? I'm not a great mechanic, but I do anticipate slowly building a great shop in one corner of the garage. Will need to be able to fit multiple types of vehicles up to 3/4 ton trucks. I assume I will need to ensure thicker concrete slab to be poured under this area?

Got initial plans from architect Friday, hoping to meet with architect and builder this week.

(posting this now to get information, and so I can hopefully post pic of the drawings later this week).

Look up what lift you are wanting to purchase. It will tell you minimum slab thickness and distance from the post that walls and other obstructions need to be.

I just did all this last week and have made multiple drawings of floor plans using smart draw (used the free trial period) Everything is to scale. The lines going up and down of the side of the two post lift are the required distances that the lift manufacturer suggests.

Here is the drawing for a 40x64

Make sure you check with your local government regarding what rules and or regulations you must adhere to. My garage is the same size overall as yours..... but limited to two roll up doors due to the city insanity (Logan Utah). I have accepted it as something I have to accept and live with it, but I wanted three doors about the size you are planning on. Mine does have a full basement, with apartment (another city requirement) and a large woodshop. Waiting on electrical and plumbing.

Thanks. Don't know what lift I want yet. I won't be getting one until I pay off the house.

You use SmartDraw.com?? I'll have to play with that when I get a chance.

Yes, smartdraw.com but I recommend you download the desktop version, as the web based version I found to be rather glitchy.

I believe they are just cabinets I colored differently.

i've been messing around with the program as well, kind of clunky but not sure if it's due to my comp being a little slow.

threw this together in a few hours for my house/shop/barn/garage deal that i hope to be able to build in 6 years or so

Save a copy as a JPEG then hit the paper clip icon in the advanced post. You'll figure it out from there.

Quoted you to say I didn't see the paperclip icon, and then lo-&-behold, there it is!

But wait....there's more!!! 2 pages scanned as a PDF is 931KB, and the website limits it to 146KB.

And.....When I open the file (in PDF) it won't let me save it as anything else.

Gotta love computers. They talk to each other about as much as the different departments at the VA!

Here!
Open the PDF, hit print screen on your keyboard, open paint and paste the screenshot from your clipboard, save that and try uploading it.

I've put island workbenches in my shop for the last thirty five years or so, and in the labs I've designed at work, too. I'm a big fan of having 360º access to a freestanding bench.

I'll have that option with the welding table since it'll be on casters. This was one of my earlier drawings. I've changed multiple things and have decided on a 40x56x14 barn instead of the 40x64 as shown here.

The inside design still has plenty of time to change since I'll have to start saving again after I get the barn paid for. Which will probably be a little more difficult since my first kid will be here in July.
