Been following this site for some time, it is about time for me to finalize my plans and get going. I have a little chunk of land that is big enough for 40' wide and 60 deep. I hear nobody ever said, "boy, I wish my barn was smaller", so that's my footprint.

This will be used for general storage, parking and working on at least two vehicles and maybe woodworking projects.

Where it is located I want something that has a little character. I'm thinking about a gambrel roof on the southern 2/3'rds and a lean to to the north. 14' door on the right might be overkill.... I don't have anything that big nor do I plan to in the future, but I'd hate to find myself 2' short in 20 years...

The left side will be a seperate garage, walled off at 14x30. Big enough to keep one finished car and some storage away from all the dust and contaminants from the working side.
Planning on a 2 post lift centered and back far enough to park something in front while sd one thing is on the lift, like if I pull a body, there will be room to line them up.

This is going to be a pole building, my builders say they can add a 26x60 second floor in the gambrel for 10k, seems like a deal for 1,500 sq feet of storage. There probably isn't much left in the budget to finish this space. I worry about light in a 60' long room with only windows at each end. I could add dormers or skylights or light tubes.... but all of that will come more money that isn't in the budget.
One idea is to set up a theater room, I've got all the audio to do it, which would negate the need for light... does anyone else have a room that as I've with no windows?

Another question is on ceiling height. Am I right that a 2 post lift needs 12'6"? Is there a downside to having a 16' ceiling besides more stairs to the second floor?

One of the mistakes I made in my building is to have the OH doors to close to the sidewalls. It looks like you only have 1' planned. I would suggest you review that. Items get placed along the walls and will block the doorway. I would not build another shop without at least 3' from the door to the wall.

I'm not sure if you have settled on a builder yet but I bought my materials package from M&W http://www.mwbsc.us/mwbsc_res/mwbsc_new4/index.html . They have designers on staff that will set with you and design your building and put together the materials. The materials we received were all to notch with no lumber being rejected.

Thanks for the insight, I already have a builders my wife grew up with them, it's a family busines, Berkey Pole Buildings.
Since it is 60' deep I need to keep items stored against the walls to a minimum. Plus, I always seem to get leaves and stuff blowing in, if there isn't anything up front it is easier to get the leaf blower out and clean up real quick.
