I am currently almost dried in on my shop construction and started looking at the interior build out I have planned. The shop is 40x60x16 and I was planning on building a space about 14x24x9 inside for bathroom, small kitchen area for fridge etc and seating area for wife, kids, friends etc.

I have been looking at using the space above for storage and a place to mount air compressor. I am not sure which span table is appropriate to look at as I am not 100% sure of what load I should be considering. I was thinking of using 40psf live/20psf dead; this would put me at 2x12 for the 14ft span with yellow pine. Seemed a bit excessive to me on the sizing but I'm not an expert.

Any tips would be appreciated.

You will need a span table for a floor. Is that 2x12 on 16” centres? What you might think is over kill just think of a house. Mine has 2x10 on 16” centres fir wood on a 12’6” span. And the floor moves. I’m a carpenter and I can’t stand moving floors lol I like my ch!t sturdy.

For my loft, I used 2x12 southern pine on 16" centers, and span just under 15.5'. I put 3/4 plywood down on the floor and 0 movement.

Sorry should have clarified, the span was 16" O.C. I will also be using 3/4" plywood for the flooring.

Thank you all for the help. Appears using the calculator I am good with 2x12s up to 50psf/20psf at the span I am looking at.

I had also planned to build a small platform for the compressor at the intersection of two of the load bearing walls, hoping that would also help with the vibration transfer.

Not sure. Just allow for the extra weight. If you're like me the amount of stuff you need to store will keep increasing.
