First post,

I am going to be building a 40x60 "Morton" style building, perhaps by Morton here in South Florida.

I want it to be tall enough for a 14' high door, I don't need it, but I am looking towards resale and the probability of someone storing a motorhome, camper, or tall boat is likely.

Do I need to go 16' walls or can I get away with 14'? I would rather stay with 14' if it would work.

I was thinking 1 20' wide door in the middle of the gable south, and 1 12'x12' on the north gable end.

Thoughts, experiences?

Thank You.

You are going to need a couple of feet above the door unless you get a special door and opener. My building has 10 ft doors, a 12 ft walls and there is not a lot of extra space there.

Can't have 14' door in a 14' wall...... gotta have room for header. Although, not sure what Morton's use for door headers. I was thinking along the lines of a doubled up 2x10 or LVL used on stick built construction.

Agree with the comments on the header height. Defintely would recommend 16'. My motorhome is 13'6" tall just fits through a 14' tall door. If you are looking at resale my vote would be 16'. I just had (3) 24' doors installed in my toy garage annex. Had a 20' in previous garage. Trying to back two large vehicles in left very little room for error with a 20' door. If you can would recommend a 24'. Will defintely need an electric opener for either.

Mine are insulated doors which cost a fortune. Would think that non insulated would not be that bad. Pictures of the doors are at end of thread below.

Hope this helps.

16' it is.

I got an initial quote from Cornerstone, that builds Timbercraft out of central Florida.

Waiting to hear back from Morton.

I appreciate the comments and suggestions. I will certainly keep up with the build and I am sure some questions along the way.

A header is not required if the door is in a gable end and you are using roof trusses. You have to use coffered or scissors trusses so the door has some place go when it rolls up.

In typical stick built construction, you need to run a "continuous" top plate from side to side. A nailer above the plate is allowed because there is no load on the gable wall.

Please wait for Morton's bid before you make a decision. I have dealt with them on 2 occasions years appart and cannot say I ever had a problem. Also, their warranty is one of if not the best in the bussiness. My original building was 45 X 75. When I had the salesman out to quote a 45 X 50 addition, I showed him some places on the roof where it appeared some paint was peeling. I think the building was 6 or 8 years old. He made a report and said they would make repairs when they put up the addition. I was expecting a repaint. When they came and did the addition, they removed and replaced ALL of the original roof panels! They said they had discovered a problem with a batch of the special paint on some roof panels. Original building is now over 20 years old and has no leaks and minimal paint fade (charcoal roof and lower panels). Also, the price you are quoted is the price you pay, to the penny (unless, of course, you make changes). Chip.

I am anxious to get the Morton quote.

Initially I emailed Morton, followed up with a call. I was told the salesman would call me, after about a week I called the salesman again. He told me to email him the specs, which I did immediately, that was 3 days ago and have not heard anything back. How quick was the turn around for you?

Looks like I will be going with a 40x60x16 Timbercraft. 6 windows, 2 man doors, 1 - 20x14 roll up on gable end.

I'll start a build thread as soon as work starts.

I have 3 Morton buildings here in Bushnell Florida. Call Morton in Gainesville and speak to Paul. If he doesn't handle south Florida, he will get you hooked up with the rep for your area. Great company - no problems with any of our buildings. matching 42 x 60 shop, 24 x 36 (6 stall horse barn) and a 42 x 40 hay barn

I did speak with Paul.

I am very familiar with Morton. I just feel more comfortable with the builder I chose.
