For the last 15 or so years I have enough been tinkering with projects in the "back shop" at my father's business. This was fine since it is a 40x60 and I was pretty well the only person who used it. The issue with using his free shop was distance. It was fine when I lived close. We built a new house a couple years ago and now live on the far side of town 7-8miles away (20ish minute drive). Now i'm finding myself using the shop less and less since I dont want to drive across town. Also not having all of my tools at home is a pain in my rear...

Therefore i am having a shop built at my home. Primarily used for storage, boats, cars, trailer, etc... And working on cars. Building itself will be (as the name implies) 40x60x14. All steel construction welded frame. Lots of garage doors: 16x10, 10x10, 9x10 and 12x14. All of the doors are on the Gable ends, done so at my wife's request. More on that later. Building will be fully insulated, electrically powered and hopefully very user friendly. Here are a few progress pics. Concrete is monolithic slab with thickened edges, lots of rebar and even more rebar where my car lift goes. Today was the first day of construction and the didn't start until about 1pm after the rain. Tomorrow should be a lot of progress. The main beams for the center supports are 4x10 .25 wall. WAY heavier than I expected.

As you can tell the building is pretty close to my house. My wife was worried all the doors would look terrible. So on the house side is only one 16x10 which we will make look "fancy". All of the other doors are on the back end. To the right of the building I will have a drive way to go past the building and be able to simply back into the bays with no crazy corners, hopefully

Here is a drawing of the final layout. After lots of research on this site I ended up with this for my needs. I very much dislike moving 15 items every time I need something in or out. I want everything to have it's own space and not be blocked in.

Right now the plan is to plumb for air compressor at every point of entry and a couple in the middle around work areas rapid air or similar. Also plan on having a couple different welder plugs so I'm not limited on location.

What I have no idea about is lighting. My current shop has poor lighting and I don't want to regret the layout. I know there are many many posts on the subject which I will be combing over in the next few weeks. But I will happily take any advice my new imaginary friends can offer so I don't make a mistake. Build has no skylights, windows will be on North and west walls. Garage Doors on North and South walls. Most work in shop will be evening and nights.

I will be the first to admit I am by no means a lighting expert. With that being said I figured roughly 50 lumens per square ft is "decent". Based on that number I picked the fixtures I wanted (8200 lumen led) and just did the math to figure how many I needed. I went with 18 8' fixtures for my 50x64x16 shop I'm in the process of building. Hope this helps

Well no more progress last week. Complete washout and now mud fest around the pad. Supposed to be nice the next 2 days so hopefully they can get it mostly done.

What is everyone's opinions on regular garage door opener vs jackshaft?

Thanks you the link I will check it out.
Didn't get home in time tonight to get good pictures. But they got all the wall insulation and sides done and about a 1/3rd of the roof done. I will get some better pictures in the morning.

question are you wall panels just painted two tone? I think they are based on what I see but its hard to tell. If you did it as one panel I think that was much smarter than what I did with the two piece plus its less labor!
