40x60x16 Lighting Requirements?

Hello All,

I am in the processing of purchasing integrated LED lighting for my barn as I want to redo the ceiling/lighting from the hodgepodge the previous owner put up. I have a 40x60 with 16ft ceiling. I have several fixtures bought, but I am second guessing whether it will be enough or not so I'd like some expert feedback here.

The lights I am using are the Lithonia IBH15 integrated LED high bay lights. They are 155W, 15,000 lumens each. I have attached a couple layout options I am considering. I currently have enough lights to complete the "3x5 grid" option. But I am wondering if it will be enough and if I need to jump up to the "4x5 grid" option or not.

My shop will be used primarily for automotive work and detailing so I want to have adequate light at working height. It has a white steel ceiling and will eventually have white steel walls also once I get around to insulating and finishing it. I'm thinking at least a 100 foot candles is a good target? i just have no clue if my 3x5 grid option will get me there or if I'll need more. (Disregard the loft area, I will have different lighting up there since it is not a "high bay" type of area.)

The reason I ask, is Menards has these lights on clearance as a discontinued item now so if I do need more, I need to get them asap so I can make sure all of my lighting fixtures are the same.

Let me know your opinions please!

Disregarding loft area and treating entire space as one big empty 15ft height space - According to the Acuity Visual Interior tool (link) your 4x5 pattern will give you 100fc @ work plane. A 3x6 pattern yields 90fc. Here's an instructional (link) on how to use the tool (prior link has the Lithonia IES preloaded). 3x5 pattern yields 75fc.

Thank you for the quick reply! That's exactly what I was wanting to know. I don't know what I was doing wrong before but I couldn't get their lighting tool to work, but your link worked perfectly fine so thank you for that.

Based on that, I'll be heading back to Menards today to purchase the rest of the lights to go with the 4x5 grid option. The beauty of the LED's are I can always put them on dimmers if it's too bright at times, but at 16' ceiling height, I only want to hang lights once and not regret not putting enough up. I appreciate all the help!

Apparently I confused your 16' ceiling height with another posters 15'. No major difference: 97fc @ 16' instead of 100fc
