Well, its been a long time since I posted in this thread. Longer than I thought actually. It doesn't seem like I have gotten much done on the building project as it has been a long cold winter. When I posted last time I was just starting to prepare for outside concrete. That is now done and it consists of a 24 X 24 slab outside the overhead doors and a couple of stoops outside the walk in doors. Also, I have progressed on the interior framing of the office and wood shop. The stairs to the loft are complete and the loft floring is installed. Here are a couple of pictures that show some of the progress I have made.

I have a few more pictures of some recent progress. The first is an outside picture of the approach slab that I forgot to post in the last post. The second picture shows how some of the interior walls will be finished. It is weathered tin and old barnwood that I salvaged. The third picture is the completion of the heating system that was completed just last week. Poor timing I suppose, but I guess it works fine. They completed it last week and its been warm ever since!

The last two pictures are evidence of at least part of the reason that the building is taking so long. The lathe and mill in the pictures are ones that my son heard were for sale. They were part of an estate and the person disposing of the property seemed like he was really being inconvenienced by having to deal with it. I was able to sell my old lathe and my mill-drill and purchase these. In total I have about $1,000 in them.

Everything stayed east of us today. I would have taken my chances with a tornado if we could have gotten some rain! All we got was some clouds early and this evening as the sun was setting the air was as full of dust as I have seen in years.

Looking pretty good. Do you have plans to insulate that "fireproof" room so interior temps don't rise too high inside. Obviously the block and concrete won't burn, but they can get hot and will hold heat fro a long time which could damage the contents. Good to hear the weather was east of you. One reason I moved from NE 29 years ago.

Hadn't really thought about insulating the walls. I will spend some time researching what to do about the door. It will be a while before I get to that. Its only 5 X 7 on the inside so I would hope I wouldn't have to add too much to the wall thickness.

Right now I am trying to get the walls insulated and covered. Before that I need to finish the wiring. Yesterday I went on the internet to find out how to wire a three way switch. It appears that there are only about a hundred ways to do it. I did figure it out however, so I should be done with wiring in a few more days.

More slow progress over the last few days. I have been working on wall insulation and getting the wall covering finished. This is the southeast corner where the machine tools will reside. The framework above is not the ceiling, but rather a framework to get the lighting lower than the 12 foot ceiling in the rest of the building. Next step is to get the lathe and mill moved into place and the rest of the tools and tool boxes arranged. That should clear up some space in tmiddle of the shop so we can get to the rest of the walls.

Hello all. Its been about a year since I posted in this thread. A few things have happened that don't relate to the shop except that they slowed progress quite a bit. You know, those little things that happen in life like herneated disks (2) and maybe if one fell off of a ladder and broke their wrist. Well anyway things are back on track and some progress has been made. Actually you could say that it is almost done, in as much as it will never be completely done, but you all know how that goes.

I am posting this now to get the thread back at the top. I will post more pictures in a little while.

Since I posted a few minutes ago to get the thread back to the top I went back and looked at the pictures I had posted before. That seems like a long time ago. Anyway, here are some new pics. This area is kind of a transition area between the working parts of the shop. behind the door to the left of the stairs is an office, which isn't finished yet. The red sliding door goes to the wood shop. The stairs go up to the storage loft. There will be a refrigerator to the left of the sink. Sorry about the sideways pictures, I'll try to figure that out in the future. The sign is an original sign that hung at an International Harvester dealership that was owned by my great grandfathers brother. It is from the early 1920's.

Here are a few more pictures of the rest of the shop. These are pictures of the wood shop behind the red door. I sold my jointer before I moved and started this shop so I need to look for a new one. I also need a bigger planer so it looks a little empty now.

Now some pictures of the auto and machine tool areas. Its getting closer but not "done" yet. Still have to plumb for air. The Fairlane is one that I just bought a few weeks ago. It will be the first major project.

Good to see you have set adversity on it's heels and returned to the Garage Journal with more insight into your incredible shop. Looking forward to the additional narrative and photos to come. Applause.

Very nice!
I'm south of you in Wichita.
How did you make out last week during the severe weather?

Thanks for the comments guys. Like I said before, there still a few things to do, but I am looking forward to working "in" the shop instead of working "on" the shop.

39Tudor- We narrowly escaped the storm last week. If you saw the TV coverage of the tornado blowing the grave stones over, some of that was about a mile from our house. It wasn't a very big tornado, but even a small one isn't to be taken lightly!

Rarebreed - The Fairlane is a 64. We found it on the internet (where else?) and made a flying road trip to Racine, Wisconsin to get it. It has a Speedway straight axel kit in the front, a Curries 9in rear, Willwood brakes on all 4 corners, and not much else. We did get 2 complete sets of trim, but no interior, no windshield, no back glass. The body is not rusty at all and appears to be straight so it should make a good start for a project.

Wow 40 x 60 is a nice size. You've come a long way in a year. Love the front of the wood Shop! You've got a very functional yet personalized shop there! Sorry to hear a bout about the step ladder accident, step ladders will get you, especially the cheap ones. Looks like you are really enjoying your new shop. Thanks for the update.

OK, I've seen a H.A.M.B. sign, and a Mustang sign....so, what gives? Nice shop, looks well thought out and design to be useful. That's the area I lack, can't seem to figure out a good floor plan, yet.
At first I thought you were going to be living in the barn, with the heat and other insulated area's. Should be nice when its cold outside.

Just read through the thread, and I'm impressed! Wish we could put up pole barns here in California.

Great shop setup, and I hope the new job has worked out for you.
