44x64 plans

Im in the planning stages of a 40x64 stick frame shop.

can I get a few comments or suggestions on these rough plans ive been drawing up.

Looks pretty nice, is the wall between the hot and cold side going to be load-bearing? do you have plans to open it all up eventually or will you keep it split? I would reccomend some sort of large door between the cold and hot side so you can move stuff without having to go outside. Will be especially nice in the dead of winter.

yes I was planning on a footing and insulated 2x6 wall to hold up the attic trusses on the inside divider wall. As for a big door I figured the lift would be in the way, I would definitely have a man door somewhere between the two sections though.

What are your plans for the area under the stairs in the cold side? I would use that space as the mechanical room. A furnace and air compressor would fit just fine under there. Sure would free up some space on the working side.

Have you considered having a sink to wash up after working on greasy cars? It's real handy to be able to wash up out in the shop before coming into the house and getting all that mess on the house doors, doorknobs, and house bathroom...
I stubbed in drains for a sink and toilet in my building when the floor was poured. It would have been cheap to have them add the plumbing for a shower and I'm wishing I had done that now even though I don't plan on installing one... The toilet will come in handy if the shop is not close to the house, especially in case of an unexpected emergency....

Oh, and being that your shop is fairly large, plan your electrical runs out now including your panel location. For your large power devices, like a lift, air compressor, welder, etc. If you know where they will be located and happen to be across the shop from your breaker panel... Consider installing electrical PVC conduit under your concrete from the breaker panel to your large load device. That will save you the hassle of running the cable up to the ceiling, then down again. It's much cleaner install and might save you some money in cable length. You can only do this with devices where you know their location though. A vehicle lift might be a good example.. Then there won't be an electrical cable dangling from overhead...

ya I will have a full bathroom somewhere in the shop. might make the mech room on one level and the office above it with the bathroom.

the electrical idea is greatly appreciated, I woulda never thought of that.

this is gonna be a 4 year build. im starting this summer with the foundation, then walls and roof next year, then the floor the following, then finish everything the year after.

I already have a nice 24x28 heated garage at home so I have time to plan this out. but I need to decide on the rough layout for the foundation this summer. I still need to price out attic trusses and see if its worth having that storage area upstairs. I could just do standard 4/12 roof all the way across the whole thing. and then I wouldnt need to worry about a footing for the interior wall cause it wouldnt be load bearing.

Starting to scrape topsoil this weekend for this project. still undecided if I want the loft area or just use standard trusses across the whole roof for one uniform roof line.

Well after a long summer of being busy with other projects, I finally got a local guy to come in and scrape the topsoil off and level out the future pad and parking pad out in front of where the shop will be. Hoping to get my footing and foundation poured before it gets to cold here.

got the footing and frost walls poured, now just need to get some Styrofoam on them and backfill next week.

Oh, and it grew to 44x64

got some insulation on and backfilled. this will be the way it stays till early spring when the framing starts. 44x64. the insulation section on the inside of the foundation is for the heated section.

I hope you have a MINIMUM of 2" of foam board on the vertical foundation walls all the way down to the frost line. 4" would be better.

Same is true for under the floor. 2" MINIMUM, 4" better.

You pay for insulation ONCE, you pay to heat and/or cool your interior space everyday.

the insulation section on the inside of the foundation is for the heated section.

While the earth (and therefore the concrete) under the middle of your uninsulated section may be 50F, the temperature of the earth and concrete will start dropping off as you get within 6-8' of the exterior wall. Close to the exterior wall (where you have no foundation insulation) expect the concrete to not be much warmer than the temperature outside.

You pay for insulation ONCE, you pay to heat and/or cool your interior space everyday.

If you think you might EVER heat that space, dig up your back fill and insulate those foundation walls.

Could you get by with a "slider" type door between the two spaces? Like a traditional barn door.

I got 2" of insulation on the outside around the whole perimeter than I have 2" along the perimeter of the inside section that will be full time heated. I will also lay 2" along the floor under the rebar when I pour the floor.

I have decided to change the layout a bit and make it a bit more of a conventional building without the attic truss section, but there will still be a mezzanine section in the heated section.

little update... well no progress but still a plan in the works.

With the hurting Alberta economy we decided to postpone this project for 1 year and stock pile some cash for the rainy day fund.

It actually worked out ok because the parents are building a new garage and we will be busy this year on their garage and yard.

This is the new simple layout. no complex roof lines to worry about. 44x64 with 16' walls. 24x44 full time heated area with a suite and room to park 1 truck.

Well its the new year and this will be the year that I build the shell of my shop.

I'm actually glad I took the year to save cause I found a few new ideas along the way. I have been researching solar heat as an aid to heat the shop.

I built a 4x8 screen collector to see if the whole theory actually worked, and it does. So next I will try making a coil and see how it works for heating glycol.

here is a sketchup plan of the shop, the south end will be modified slightly because I'm planning on building a 12x20 collector

the overhead doors face east. the inside will have a mezzanine on the south end of the building. that will be a 24x44 full time heated section

made pretty good progress for just 2 people working on it.

just finished unloading more 2x4x18ft braces and anchor screws and a new ladder to do the top plate to make this puppy secure for my work week. then within minutes of unloading the wind got ahold of the wall and made a mess.

got the roof on. was going to do shingles but after a wind storm and the neighbours losing shingles on their roofs i switched to tin last minute.

still messin with the idea of solar heating the south bay of the shop. Alberta's planning on jacking the price of nat gas in the future for carbon taxes, so i tried a 32sq ft glycol heater. tried it with water out of the hose bib and it heated it 10 degrees through a single pass. thinking of going huge 240sq ft collector on south wall and heating the slab.
