My shop that was self built, the only things that was done by hiring out was the inside concrete and the gutters, Lot's of friends and alot of beer involved.

It took a total of 16 months to finish, but I wasn't in a hurry, I wanted it to be a hobby not a job.

6 inches with fiber, 4000 psi, 8 mil plastic, saw cut the next morning, no cracks, I was very meticulous about the prep work

I also did my floors first before insulation.
I wanted to mention for everyone's benefit that when it comes time to be on the ladder to have someone bracing the bottom. The ole ladder 101 thing.

What happened to me was that I was at the top of the wall installing wall board. Between the slick floor and construction dust the ladder decided to slip out from under me. I, hanging onto the ladder, took a jarring ride down the wall.
No hurts but it was a spooky, oh c*** moment.

I suppose it would have made a good "can't fix stupid" video. Bump, slide, bump slide, and so on all the way down.

An appropriate hard to slip rubber mat under the ladder may also work. In hindsight a scaffold would have been the better, safer tool.

My design, I drew up my own plans and they were excepted by the County Zoning Department, they did require that I have a Engineer seal for the trusses which wasn't a problem because the company who built my trusses gladly E-mailed me a copy.

Nice. I need to find out what the regulations are out here ( I assume there wont be many as I live in a very small, agriculturally based area).

If you don't mind me asking, what do you think you have invested into it minus the concrete? How much work did you actually do yourself?

Great work again!! That place looks great, and I showed it to the wife, and she said "lets build one".

Minus the concrete, I have about $25,000 invested .
My wife started a spread sheet when I started and she saved every receipt for every nail, screw,or anything bought for the shop.
Everything except the inside Concrete and the gutters were done by myself, my sons or on a few occasions friends.
Remember that it took about 16 months to complete, so I had time to find the best prices on nearly everything we purchased. for example the windows were bought at a yard sale (brand new) for $20 each, the shingles were purchased over a year before the construction began at Home Depot for $5 a bundle (discontinued color) so everything was well thought out and planned beforehand.

How long did you wait to seal after the concrete finishers were done. How many 5 gallon buckets did it take and what did you use to apply the sealer with? Looks great

The sealer was applied before they left and it took most of 10 gallons, there was some left.
It was applied with a Industrial metal sprayer, not the plastic home type.

Man thats a beautiful floor, I'd be happy if the pro I hired would of just made it level.
I just painted mine last week, and although the color looks good, it just made all the imperfections really obvious.
What kind of toys are you going to store in there?

When is comes to your post and setting them in the ground, How deep did you go with the holes, what diameter of hole, what did you put in the bottom of the hole, and is the concrete above ground level? Basically I want the whole hole detail The building looks very well built and looks great I'd like to add onto my stick buit garage and have been kicking around a pole style addition. I think I can still frame most of it myself but have never built a pole style of building. Your pics show good detail

Kevin usually the hole detail is per your county recommendations. I received a plan from the company I bought the kit from and my county revised the holes for more "uplift protection." In my location in MD, I had to have a 16 or 18" diameter hole with a poured base footer consisting of basically one bag of concrete. The pole should sit on that footer 36" down into the ground. Then I had to add some lags into the bottom of the post and then add another bag of concrete. Then fill in remaining hole with dirt and done...Granted you are in Ohio and everything is probably completely different there!

I live in Butler County and they have a handout for pole barns that you can download from their planning web site, it specifies what you need to do.
In our county the hole has to be 50" deep with a 8" concrete
footer, thus the pole is in the ground a minimum 42", the minimum hole diameter is 12".
An 80# bag of concrete was acceptable as a footer for each hole.
after the pole was placed in the hole, dirt was then tamped around the pole.

The side walls are 13'6" and the doors are 12' high x 10' wide.

First, nice job! Really like it.

I had the same question, "What about heat?" I've been considering a pole barn and was thinking of in-floor heating. Did you consider that? And if so, what kept you from it?
