Well, let’s try this again. My computer has conspired against me getting this review onto the site. I had the whole thing written out and not saved when the browser crashed. Grrrrr…… I wanted to write this review because I decided to buy this particular box based on NissanCrawler’s review of the 72” and thought I’d return the favor to others that may not be looking for that big of a box.
So here it is. I recently bought the Montezuma 41” Tool Chest and Top Box from StrictlyToolBoxes.com and dealt with Shannon there. Great guy to work with and he made sure every question was answered that I had. They were in between shops and often without their computers as I called and still able to take care of me.
This was the first item I have ordered off of the internet in at least 5 years. I hate buying off the internet as I like to see/feel/touch what I am spending my money on. Inevitably what you receive is not what was promised or were expecting prior to payment and then has to be sent back. I am glad to say that this whole process went smooth as silk with the Montezuma product and Shannon at Strictlytoolboxes.com.
The box….. 41" Montezuma Tool Boxes 19 Drawer Tool Cabinet & Top Chest. It’s dimensions are 41x18x62 with casters. The casters are extremely solid and have 2 stationary and 2 swivels. I have often heard complaints of how people are scared to roll their box around, while I don’t have hundreds of pounds of tools in this thing yet I can’t imagine how much weight you’d have to add to make these casters unstable. It rolls effortlessly over the garage sill/ driveway crack which is about 3/4”. The top and bottom are connected with a hook shaped bracket that hooks into the top box and bolts to the bottom chest. This will stop it from falling forward however not backwards. For me this is no big deal as my box will not be moved much and it seems very stable.
I am not technically proficient in the specs of tool boxes so I am not able to go into great detail as to why this box is so stout but that is exactly what it is. I was looking at many other boxes and willing to spend around $1500. I checked out the Costco/Lowes/Home Depot/Craftsman. I was close to plopping down the money and being content (for now) with the Craftsman. I am sure glad I didn’t. The drawers alone are a huge difference. The drawers on the Montezuma do not feel like they are going to jump off the rails because there is so much side to side deflection in them. The steel gauge without going and finding other boxes spec seems much heavier. This box is made of 20ga steel. This is also what the 56” boxes that they sell are made of. So if anything this box is even sturdier than the bigger box due to its narrower drawers. The entire unit weighs ~380lbs.
My 2 favorite features on this box are the lipless top shelf and the full wrap aluminum on the drawers leading edges. I am 6’5” so I do not need the lipless shelf in order to be able to see in there but for some reason I still like it. The drawers leading edges and handles are wrapped in aluminum. This seems really nice as tools will at some point get tossed backed into the drawer and end up chipping the powder coat finish.
The only negative I have to say about the box is that you can see on the outside where the box was tack welded marked by a dimple. This I feel is not a biggie but worth mentioning and wouldn’t stop me from buying another Montezuma product.
All in all I am extremely happy with the product I received as I didn’t think I would ever have this quality of a box as I will never spend the required money on a big truck brand box for my home garage. I have used Snap-On boxes at work for the last yrs and they are nice and they are sturdy. This box is definitely not quite up to par with that quality but it is not very far behind. For the price difference of ~75% less than a truck box there is not a 75% less quality difference. I would prefer to spend that price difference on filling the box with tools which I will need to do as I have lots of space left! If you have questions give me shout and I’ll try my best to help.
