45 kW Generac - 3.2 hours!

I have a Generac 45 kW generator for sale, that was my father-in-laws. He passed away several years ago, and as part of clearing stuff up for my mother-in-law I've handled selling some of his stuff (he was an electrical contractor). One of the last items to go is this generator.

He installed it as a backup for his house (big house, but still overkill), but it was never run. It runs on propane, and was plumbed into the propane tank used for heat for the house. It doesn't have an enclosure, as he had built his own custom enclosure and it was destroyed in removing it. The generator is at my house now, in my barn under a tarp. We're located in northern Michigan, about an hour south of the Mackinac Bridge.

It's a very nice unit, with only 3.2 hours on it, and looks like new. I have all of the install docs provided by the Generac rep, and the testing docs. We'd like to get $7,000.00 for it. I have attached several pictures of the generator.

Yeah, my father-in-law tended towards overkill. He was running a business as well, but 45kw was a lot more than he needed.

have you run it? Arent these supposed to be run once a month for a while? If its years old and only has 3 hours on it, thats a bit of a concern....

mrb, I did run it briefly before disconnecting the propane. Ideally you are correct, they should be run monthly. We had test timers set up on them when I was working in cellular, and we'd give them about an hour's worth of exercise each month. I suspect my father-in-law didn't do this because he didn't have an automatic bus transfer set up, and because he didn't want to shift the house load onto the generator, thereby requiring that he reset all of his electronics. If you could have seen the A/V setup he had, you'd have hesitated too.

bmwpower, it varies a bit depending on exactly what parts of the house you want to power, but most folks consider 12-13k a "whole house" generator, meaning you can run pretty much everything without having to overload the generator. 12k provides about 100 amp service, whilethe normal home service is 200 amps, but you aren't usually using *everything* at once. A 45 kw generator would easily run 3-4 houses without losing much ability to do your normal stuff, and probably 6-8 houses if you just provided electricty for selected items like furnaces, freezers and pumps.
