So I have been talking about it for a year or two, but its finally coming to fruition. I dug the hole and began bring in rock for the driveway and garage pad base. After a coupple of days I ended up with a 270 tonne rock base consisting or 2" limestone down. The engineers plans were for a 16" thickend edge sloping up for 24" total width with a 6" thick slab. Heres some pics from the first day of bring in fill for the pad. In the end it was approx. 18" thick on the one side sloping to approx. 10 inchs thick on the one side. I never thought I would use nearly this much gravel. 18 tandem loads at approx. 15+ tonnes per load for the road and the pad!

My dad and I have been slaving our buts off for a week trying to beat the winter cold that coming. This ended up being a much bigger job than I anticipated. Now I'm starting to see why I had quotes for 30 G's. In the end I have a friend who's doing the pour and guiding me each step of the way. In these next pics we have all the rebar tied and are almost finished installing the 2200' feet of pex. I beefed up the rebar to 12' centers for the ease of putting down the radiant heat pipe. In the end I used 9 250' rolls of the barrier pex for the radian heat. For insulation we used the Dow Corning 2" polystyrene. Expensive, but I'm hoping well worth it...For any Canadians reading this....Research your building materials. I was able to pick up both the pex tubing and floor insulation for less than half the price at Menards in the States.

So we got the pour done....Only used 46 yards of concrete!!! Went smooth and I'm happy with the finished product. Starting putting the formular 250 insulation around the perimeter of the the foundation. Code in our municipality calls for 2ft around the perimeter. I had some extra left over and chose to go 4ft around the entire building. Has anyone had any experience with this? Temp. in the winter can sometimes be as low as -40 degrees celsius and I'm trying to prevent any frost heaving? Heres some pictures of the pour. We ended up using a pumper truck and had 7 cement trucks emptied in under 2 hours!!!

Do you have any pictures of the perimeter insulation installed? Also where are you in Canada?

Thanks Matt

Heh flyguy330... the pad looks amazing!! As far as I know so far here in Ontario we just have to put the styrofoam up against the footings to prevent heat from escaping outwards... haven't seen or been told anything about 2' around.... just down to the bottom of the footings. Any more detail on this?

Man this project has been keeping me busy!!! I think I bit off more than I can chew but its getting close to being closed up. My cousin and his crew framed this in 2 days and left the rest of the work to me. Before he left he said, "I don't think you have any idea how much work this is going to be." He was right. I've been out there so much, that I thnk my wife is going to divorce me. But at least I can sleep in my mancave when its all done!!!
