480V Vulcan Oven Help

Hey Everyone,

I recently purchased a double stacked Vulcan VC4ED 480V 1/3 phase oven off an auction site for a new restaurant. Before buying I spoke to a Vulcan rep who told me the oven is easily convertible to single phase electric which was important since our building doesn't have 3 phase.

After looking at the oven our electrician said he can't make it work since we don't have 3 phase or 480 in the building.

Is there any way to get the oven to run on 240 single?

Here is a link to the oven and it's specs. Oven Link

Any help would be extremely appreciated!

Based on Vulcan's published service manual, https://www.webstaurantstore.com/documents/pdf/vulcanvcelectric_servicemanual.pdf,
they offer two versions of each model oven:

Your version (480), which can only run on three-phase 480 power, and an alternate version (208-240), which can run on either 208 three-phase or 240 single-phase.

Sounds like that Vulcan rep you spoke to didn't know what he was talking about, and because of that you got hosed.

I'm confused because in the listing it does say "field convertible to 1 phase"

Single phase 480v.

"480V, 25 kW, ships 3 phase; field convertible to 1 phase"
So I guess my question is would there be any way to get that oven to run using a transformer or converter or anything at all

Yes, you will need a single phase 240v to 480v transformer. They exist. Expect to pay around $1700-2000 + freight for a new 25kva 240>480 transformer. You might be able to find one used cheaper.

What is the rating of the electrical service for your restaurant?

youre gonna need a sizeable circuit for this. (over 100a)

There are on electric heating elements there all single phase that can be wired to three phase. Two poles of 3 phase is single phase.

If the correct supply voltage is available, the heating elements should be able and to reconnected. If they are 480 Volt elements and all you have is 220/240 they might be able to be center tapped.
Finding a used transformers might be an option.

I believe you will have to rewire the heating elements also.
Not rewire, replace to match the desired voltage, usually a choice of 208V, 240V, or 480V, there could also be a control transformer if present would need the voltage changed by reconnecting the taps on the primary.
