I am planning to use 4 12v car batteries. Is there anything wrong with using ONE of the 4 batteries which are in series to simultaneously power my lights or even to activate the contactor? I realize that this would probably unbalance the batteries.

Thanks

If LED's are used for lighting, some of the accept wide DC input voltage. You may be able to have a fully 48 Volt system. Same goes for the coil on the contactor.

I have run into problems doing that, one of your batteries will be pulled down and the others stop charging when they are full. There is a device made for electric golf carts that fixes the issue.

Buck converters are cheap these days and very efficient. Battery is expensive.
