.401 is both locally accessible and plentiful...but I recently scored a really nice 7X air hammer/riveter and would need to now add some punches & chisels to my arsenal...Any recommended and AFFORDABLE ones out there?

I'm no expert on rivet guns, and you probably know this, but I've read there are adapters available from .498 to .401.

I have a 9x atlas copco That I bought a while back. I bought the grey pneumatic chisels I think it's a 7 piece set there OK for the money, I've broken 2 of them. I think if you really want good chisels you have to go with Ajax tool works and buy individuals.

The adapters are handy and can be found on eBay for about $15 but I would not solely rely on them as they can crack and the lighter duty .401 chisels can and will bend due to the serious power

My best advice is go slow and take your time it will save you a lot of broken bits

.401 to .498 adapter from the Yard Store, very good company to deal with. Buy a couple.

I have the Gray Pneumatic chisels, and the matching quick disconnect chuck, and have been happy with them with my CP717.

Yeah I just got an Atlas Copco 7x as well, my current hammer is a CP 3X which I love...recently stumbled upon a like new 7X A-C so I snatched it up.

My MAC guy sells Ajax so I'll hit him up for some real big boy chisels... probably just get a standard chisel and a straight punch to start with.

I recently got air hammer with .498 shank and just ordered few bits for it yesterday form JBtoolsales. They have individual bits from Old Forge, Ajax and Grey Pneumatic for .498. However finding some them on their site is a bit tricky because it's not always clear if they are .401 or .498.

I skipped the GP set since I think this hammer will primarily be used for driving bolts/pins/bearings etc. Not for cutting tailpipes or rivets or sheet metal. My "new" 3x hammer will hopefully take care of that.

If you have a truck guy that stocks them then I would spend the extra money for the ease of warranty if he agrees that they are covered :dunno:

I'd also recommend getting a quick chuck from ajax if your going to be changing bits often

By the way they are freakin Awesome :rocketwho Hammer time

What A.C guns are you guys using?
I am wondering if the quick change chucks from GP/Ajax/etc.. all fit them?

Ajax Tool company makes everything for 401 and 498 and they are a good value and lots of people sell them

I'm running an RRH12P-TS with an ajax 3200-... I'll have to check tomorrow

I remember it was a pain in the *** and I had to call the company and multiple dealers to get the right threaded nylon washer nobody carries it and ajax's "won't sell to the public" but in the end ajax's took care of me so right on there are still good companies out there

The gun really didn't feel complete until I installed the Chuck

She is a beauty - I got the same gun, got it used but it seems to be in good condition.
Excuse my ignorance Finky, but if I understand correctly the nylon washer is some kind of adaptor inside the chuck? Meaning if I buy a chuck online it won't fit my Atlas?

Anyone know if this is the same story with the smaller Atlas guns, I also have a 3x that uses .401 shank.

Yes that's correct it a threaded spacer thats pressed into the chuck. They make multiple chucks for .401 and .498 each gun requires it's own nylon washer depending on the external threads on the end of the gun but they are cheap 10-15 bucks each

I will get you the part #s when I'm at work tomorrow

I don't own an air hammer so I don't know anything about their shank sizes, but just curious about the "oddball" sizing?

Why the weird sizes like 0.401 and 0.498 instead of something more straight forward like 3/16 and 1/2 for example. Does anyone know the back story to this?

3200-1 or 3 I let you decide I'm looking for what nylon ring you need I'll find it. But if not call and ask for Lance @ Ajax tool works he can look it up for you
