I got a bunch of 4x4 and 2x8 foam insulation for my pole barn walls. I would also like to use it in my ceiling but don't know how to do it. My roof trusses are 5' on center. Any ideas how I can do it?
Also I have been thinking about putting some kind of light panels at the top of my walls. It will be insulated so I need something that has a decent R value. Is there anything that would be cheaper than using windows? Thanks

well ceiling you need to make a grid using 1x3 furring strips on the ceiling you can use expandable foam to adhere and join panels to each other and ceiling same on walls to hold it in place you need drywall screws and fender washers to hold till foam cures.

i know what going to say expandable sounds expensive but if you buy:

little waste using professional gun vs cans and straw mess and getting half can bad. or breaking straw when you stop trigger foam stops.

you can leave can on gun for weeks and will not fissel out like straw can in a day.

also one can is like double the straw can junk. you wont believe. how much one can do...lol

i used 4x4 , 4x8 2 inch poly iso to ahear my block wall with expanding foam then osb also did garage doors too.

these help too lay fine bead :)

Windows are hard...I have the 400 series Andersens in my shop, the U value is 0.25 which is 1/R, e.g. R = 4 for the windows themselves.

Ceiling is tough for foam, lets say it has R=5 per inch...im quoting the Foamular value here. So to get R=30 for your ceiling, need 6 solid inches of foam over the whole shebang, which can get expensive.

Suppose you had 1000 sqft, I'm going to generalize the cost of the 2" Foamular 150 at $1/sqft. So you'd need 3000 sqft of insulation to build the R-30, essentially $3000.

Loose fill cellulose, on the other hand is much less expensive for same R-value, I believe the 1000 sqft will be covered for less than $1000.

But I'm guessing you got a better deal on the foam. The tricky part (time consuming to do a good job) is cutting and fitting and air-sealing the rigid board. When trapping heated air, you want the interior envelope to be very well sealed. Also the cavity which traps the insulation should be same, dead air space, to achieve max "working" R-value.

Good luck with the project, insulation is always good.

For the ceiling, I would either put up ribbed metal for the ceiling and place the panels, cut to fit. Then lay the panels on top of the metal and spray foam any gaps. if you want more insulation, blow cellulose on top of the foam sheets.

The other option, find a bunch of used ceiling tile grid and hang it up. Cut your foam into 2x4 pieces and use them as the tiles.
