The last time I use one was 2 weeks ago when I was removing the clock works form a grandfather clock. I used it to acorn nut that held the hands on. I have a set with a 6.5mm and 4.5mm. I use them on different things. I restore furniture, clocks and many different things. I just order a set of nut drivers from Whea that are 1.5 too 6mm I get a lot of old computers form one of the university's and I salvage parts etc and make a good computer out of them. They are not real old and are very good for grade school class rooms. I give them to several schools. I find that I use the small sizes all the time on the computers. I have used them on cars as well. Some power hand tools have that size holding switches in along with other things. It just depends on what you are working on. I also use the small sizes on my model rail road. Many of the german trains and set ups use all the half sizes. Whia reall makes great nut drivers. I like the handles on all of thier tools. I use my mini tools more than I do anything else. I have a watch/clock work bench where I repiir colcks, electronics and anything small. I started tinkering as a kid and have never stopped. I even have the 1/4" drive sockets in my office. I keep them in my drafting flat file. I use them on the drafting machines as well. Some of the compas parts have mini nuts. 101 uses for the 5.5 mm and smaller sockets at my house.

I believe I've used 5.5 sockets quite a bit on GM trim panels.

The Snap-on general service set 144TMPB starts at 5.5mm but I see they have smaller sockets available separately (4mm, 4.5mm and 5mm). Have anyone run into those smaller sizes and where?

most gm trim is 9/32 or 7mm

a lot of gm stuff uses 5.5. HVAC pieces and parts, and instrument clusters if you ever take them apart. i run into one that i needed a 4.5 on, but i cant recall what i was working on. 90's something instrument cluster.

It's actually a very popular size depending on what you work on. In addition to trim components, many blower motors and AC actuators are secured by little brass colored 5.5mm bolts on both Ford and GM models. of course if you don't have a 5.5mm socket, you'd probably get by with a 7/32 socket.:wtf:

Agreed, to change cabin air filters on GM trucks you need one.

Thanks for all the replies and info.

Maybe the basic question is why bother with a 5.5mm nut/bolt? Why not make it either 5mm or 6 mm?

7/32" is really close to 5.5mm. It is possible that they wanted to make it popular like 19mm is popular because it is almost 3/4".

I work on copiers and 5.5mm nutdrivers are my most used tool. 90% of Ricoh copier screws are 5.5mm hex heads that can be turned with a #2 plillips screwdriver also.

Anyone make a 1/4" drive swivel socket that is short?
The Astro set I just got the 5.5 is a bit too long.
Trying to get to the one screw toward the firewall on the blower motor resistor, on a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix.
Or know a trick to get to the one back screw.
I got the front one out toward the rear of the car that is, and one of the ones toward the firewall loose I just need to loosen the other one because the blower motor resistor mounting holes are slotted.

I ordered a Capri 5.5 mm swivel socket, it's the exact same size as the Astro so no no good there.
What I'd say I almost need is an offset 5.5 mm wrench.
I might have to order this, if I can't come up with anything else.

wow. i use my multiple 5.5's Daily. have a magnetic one tacked to a 1/4 drive adapter for screwgun, another couple magnetized ones, deep and shallow, even a 1/4 drive impact universal, couple wrenches. need to find a ratchet wrench in 5.5 though...hmm.

( I do bodywork at a ford dealer :D)
I did 7 years at a Ford Dealership body shop. I think I lost more 5.5 mm's than 10 mm's:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

not only are they used in interior trim, but the locations are sometimes inset and the socket OD is to large to go into the well. I had to resort to the "Swedish OD grinder" to take the OD down (that would be spinning it on an extension against the sander / grinder)

I used 5.5mm on DPX and DPM imagesetters at my old work. Hopefully they found someone to work on those old pos machines.

I have a 6.3mm SK socket that I got from somewhere
I think that's actually a bit holder for 1/4 hex bits.

As I scroll though this resurrected zombie threads, I'm always amazed at the old faces that don't post here any more :dunno:

Not to hijack the thread but, what do you use a 4 or 4.5 mm socket on? The only thing I've ever used 4mm on was adjusting crown vic headlights and that was a special ratcheting wrench not a socket. Most new metric sets start at 4mm and run to 15 mm including 4.5 & 5.5.
Just a random thought,
