I picked up an older 6000 RPM Sioux 1287 Air Sander/Grinder. It's sold as a 7" sander but mine came with a 5" backing pad. The air consumption under load is listed at 35 CFM and free speed is 18 CFM. I have a 5 HP 80 gallon compressor that puts out 18 CFM.
What size sanding discs would work best? Is there a sweet spot? When I was shopping for a random orbital buffer all the car guys said the 6" was the sweet spot.
I'd rather use 6 or 7 inch for the greater coverage but it looks like my compressor won't be able to keep up. Should I go with 5"?
Also, I've never used these...
I've used grinding discs and flap discs on 4.5" angle grinders. Are the thicker stones better than those for anything? I don't have a guard for the Sioux.
