Gentlemen,

I have an Ajax 5HP 2 stage compressor bought new in 1989. I haven't used it for many years but am going to start to much more now. When I went to use it, I could not keep the magnetic starter running without keeping the switch box "on" button pushed in.

I had an electrician look at it and he said that the magnetic starter was at fault and bypassed one of the elements of it. He also installed a regular on/off switch. I messed with the "Square D" pressure valve (you take the cover off and there is a spring spring-loaded under the cap where the cover screws onto it (with an acorn nut attached to the cover). I wish I had never messed with it because it's not turning the compressor off when it hits 125 lbs.

My questions: Should I tighten the air shut off nut up or down to adjust it to shut off at a lower pressure? Should the magnetic starter (new one costs upwards of $300.00) be replaced? Am I playing with fire here? Any suggestions? Thank you.

If this is a true two stage compressor it should shut off at 175psi and kick in at 135-140psi.
Your pressure switch might not last too long if you are running a true 5hp (~22 amps) motor through it which is why the mag starter was on it originally.

Thanks for the info. It followed what you said about turning off & on. I had forgotten when those events were supposed to happen. I'll upgrade the magnetic starter when the cash starts rollin' in.
