Needed a 5 point security bit today, the kind with a hole in the middle of it and the bolt has a pin in the center. I have torx security bits but don't have any 5 point bits. From a quick google search it looks like they are called star bits. Are these somewhat common in life? What is a decent set to get?

No, I think think you’re referring to tamperproof Torx plus, they are 5 point. Star bits is another term for regular Torx. I like snap-on and SK, but there are certainly cheaper options.

6 pointed "star" bits are TORX.

5 pointed star bits are TORX PLUS tamper-resistant. The idea being they are more tamper resistant than regular torx because you can't just snap off the inner pin, you have to use an entirely different driver.

Regular TORX PLUS bits are also 6 pointed "stars", but with slightly different geometry. Only the tamper resistant torx plus is 5 pointed.

Just google "Tamper Resistant Torx Plus" and you'll find many suppliers and sources for said bits.

I used to do contract work with a company that does fleet dash cams, and they had a 5 point tool you needed that you literally could not buy anywhere. I got curious and found the manufacturer. It's called Penta-Plus and you really can't buy the tool anywhere, not Grainger, Fastenal, McMaster, Zoro etc.63998621b13a5fa3c485804233e6d52a.jpg

Pentalobe doesn't seem to be in the common security bit sets, but its out there.

The Penta plus may not be available but pretty easy to make the tool. All you need is a drill press and a file. Heat treat optional.

I bought a set from Princess Auto a while back to fix an idle valve on a Honda, IIRC. It looks like they're clearing them out, get 'em while they last.

I ended up on that same manufacturer's site since John Deere is throwing some of those (and some tiny non-security versions) into their fuel systems.
