Did Popular Mechanics see the need to include a *****, or a cheese knife and cork puller for wine bottles?

I would venture to guess that most of the yuppies and metrosexuals that PM caters to, are intimately familiar with all of the above.

A multibit screwdriver??? That should be on the 5 tool plan vs. the 50 tool plan. Give me a screwdriver set anyday.

Where's the carpenters square? They're extremely useful if you know how to use one. (a combination square is no substitute)

I could do without the sledge hammer. I no longer have a Ford.

Fifty everyone should have?

A list suitable for this group would be more like, "Your five thousand piece main mechanic's set, five hundred piece basement set and the two hundred piece portable set. Next week, watch for the list for the basic woodworking set and next month the expanded yard and garden set."

If you told me I had to count all my tools, I'd say, "Just shoot me now."

Funny and true. They missed the drill press, bench grinder, angle grinders and most importantly tool chest which most of wouldn't live without.

And I'd argue for most important of all, the bench grinder with coarse and fine wire wheels. That's the last power tool I'd give up. Without air tools, portable electric tools, battery-powered tools shop work goes on. However for working with used tools and old cars, the wire wheels get more use than all of them combined. I've got 12" and 8" in the shop and 6" in the basement.

You're killing me! I'm gonna start looking for some more bench grinders now with bigger wire wheels.

I carry a multi-bit screwdriver on my motorcycle to save space but they are a complete PITA for anything else. This was clearly a list for "Jim and Nancy Suburban Homeowner " so I wouldn't fault it for not having stuff like an angle grinder or something. For what it is...it really isn't such a bad list.

My thoughts exactly. For me its a lathe, mill, welder, and a backhoe plus multiples of all that is on the 50's list.

What really gets me is the Allen wrenches. Allen is a trademarked owner of the hexsocket head. Hex Key is the generic tool that fits the hexsocket. They show a Greenlee branded tool.

Snap-on tells me that I have to count all of the tools on my truck every year for insurance purposes. I pay a couple of cs agents to do it on the weekend. There is no way I would want to count my truck.

I'll come out and do it for you if you pay me in tools. :bounce:

I want to see Nancy Suburban Homeowner wield that sledge hammer or pick ax which they indicate is a top 50 must have. :)

The specify a 8-10 lb model which to me is a toy and picks are light. Perfect Nancy homeowner tools.

If they said the perfect size is 12lb-16lb and all that is man swings a 20lber then that might be debatable.

Jack stands. Can't get through life without 'em.

Don't have a pick, though I think I can substitute a hoe, or two, in it's place.

It's a city boy list...so take it that way. On a whole, it's pretty good. I also don't see the need for a sledge or pick for the average person, but oh well.

I've got 'em all, but I'm subbing my multiple kinds of "garden hoes" for the pick.

I substitute all the time. Last weekend I was tearing down old kitchen cabinets for the garbage and didn't have a sledge. An axe works wonders for demo
