Working on some quotes for a shop. A couple quotes have come back and Some prices have me thinking about if I should change plans or get more quotes.

general shop size 28' wide,60' long, 16' walls

roof 8/12 pitch ( match the house )
I was looking at half attic trusses and half scissor trusses. the quote came back with a note in the comments that if I went full scissor trusses the price would be $5000 less. Do attic trusses usually cost that much more?

The shop needs to be hard plank and composite shingle roof so it looks more like the house. I did not know it was that much more then metal roof and walls. Two different quotes, $20,000 and $19,000 upgrade. WOW.

My whole set of trusses was $2500 total including tax and delivery. 8/12 pitch 26'x40' 1/3 attic and 2/3 scissor. The scissor trusses are pricy also. All trusses were on 24" centers. I would call aroud, I would think itd be under $5k total for the trusses.

Depends on the snow load rating, among other things.

I ran into the same cost issue 10years ago. I ended up reducing the pitch and substituting storage trusses for attic trusses to control costs.

Your Texas trusses would probably be on the ground by thanksgiving in the UP.

By my math $5000 equates to about $300 more per truss. IIRC those trusses cost around $300-350. You can subtract the cost of the scissor truss but then you have to add the cost of the sub floor and additional labor to install it. Plus its probably a PITA to install those because of the increased weight so theres some more labor.

Hate to say it but that does sound reasonable.

If that is installed it seems legit. Have you ever really had too much storage space though?
Any chance on rafter construction? I did that because I wanted a full attic in my shop. Attic trusses would only give me a 13' wide space, I now have a 24' wide space with rafters.

I gt the same respone on adding attic trusses. You need twice as many and more roofing materail since the pitch is more. Unless you were keeping the pitch the same between with and without. The 5K sounds a little high for the size of the building

I am getting quotes on attic trusses right now. They cost less than 200 a piece and that is for a 40' span 7:12 pitch. 5k seems high to me. My quote was 4200.00 over the cost of standard 4:12 trusses to do half attic trusses and half scissor trusses on a 40x50 pole barn

Based on size of building, the attic trusses (assuming 2 foot spacing, compared to usual 8 foot spacing on standard trusses and/or scissor trusses), you're looking at 11 extra trusses to do 1/2 the building with attic storage. At (say) $300 apiece, you're up to $3300 in extra material costs. Plus install time being stretched over an extra 11 trusses, plus fasteners for all of those, plus delivery. So, pretty easily, for just the trusses, you're at $4000.

Then, there's plywood. The usable space in an attic truss is about 1/2 the width by the length. So in this case, it's 14' x 30'. Take that area and convert it into subfloor sheets... about 13 sheets of subfloor. Call it $20 per sheet. $260. Plus fasteners, install, delivery. And, if a stair cutout is needed, that too. I can see that hitting $1000 easily.

Edit: And with high sidewalls like you have specified, our crew usually factored in higher labor rates because it's either more equipment or more time needed to huff materials up higher.

$1000 + $4000 = $5000.

You may be able to find it cheaper, but I think the math indicates this is reasonable.

It's not clear to me if the "quote" you reference is for the complete constructed shop or just the material cost for the trusses.

If you are talking about the material cost of trusses only, then something sounds out of whack! IIRC, when I built my shop (34'x54') with all attic trusses on 24" ctrs, the differential cost between a regular "W" style truss and an attic truss was less than $100 each. Even if you throw in the flooring I don't see how you reach a total $5,000 differential.

I did attic trusses over 80 percent of my shop which has a main floor footprint right at 7000 square feet. This netted me an additional 3800 square feet of attic floor space. And it cost me about $5200 more for the trusses, flooring and labor. My spans were 44', 38', and 34' I believe.

Attic trusses are placed every 2 feet, and then require decking (subfloor). Standard trusses and scissor trusses are spaced further apart and are not decked. So there is a material and time increase to create attic space.
You can space the trusses and use truss joists in between.

You might have to order the attic trusses withe the same height bottom cord as the truss joists or add height to the bottom of the attic trusses

You would have to price everything out to know which is more economical

I didn't notice what kind of construction the OP mentioned, but a lot of the replies seem to assume pole construction with 4 ft to 8 ft truss spacing, and that makes a difference in the total cost.
