I like the bottom connection style because the cord hangs better.

This type of Power Inlet Box is just like the one I have. The boxes with the opening on the bottom do put a lot less stress on the cord/plug than the side opening boxes, as well as still maintaining a water tight seal with the cord over the boxes that the cord feeds into it from the side. Some municipalities require the water tight seal on Power Inlet Boxes for backup generators used to power homes.

Also the bottom opening boxes, at least the one I have, keeps all the dirt, crud, and insects out of the lid/seal area better than the side opening boxes I have seen.

The other thing you will want to consider in your selection of a Power Inlet Box is the type of material it is made out of. There are ones made from plastic/ABS (as shown) and ones made of Aluminum.

Related question: My meter pan is back to back with the main panel, and the wiring is fed thru a short 2" dia. ****** in the rear bottom of the panel. The panel is in a finished wall. If I wanted to install this type of inlet, could I use a bottom knockout on the meter pan and conduit to this inlet, and feed the wires thru the same ****** into the panel? It would save from having to cut the drywall below the panel to access a knockout, as well as drilling thru the exterior wall. I would think its against code, but just wanted to check.
