52 x 96 x 16 Shelby Dodge Garage

I'm starting a thread for the progress of my Workshop/storage building in Green Bay WI. I have an addiction to Shelby inspired FWD dodges of the late 80's early 90's and have run out of space at my house to work on / store them. My wife and I have purchased 4 acres about 4 miles from our current residence. The plan is it get the building up so I have a place to store finished projects along with new projects getting them out of the driveway at our house. We will eventually build a house on the lot in the next few years once we decide on a floorplan. The plan for the shop is to eventually section the building off into two 52 deep by 48 wide sections. One side for cold storage and the other the shop area. I will be installing infloor heat in the entire building but plan to only heat one half currently. The shop section will have a 15x24 office / lounge / restroom area, a 15x24 paint booth leaving a L shaped shop area that will eventually have a 2 post lift. The excavating started this week and should be done some time next week. the shop will be 150' off the road with 4 12x14 doors on the south side (96' side) of the building with 1 man door closest to where the house will be eventually placed. The driveway is 14 ft wide and there will be a additional 52 x 96 parking/turnaround in front of the shop. I'm hoping the get the building up before the show flies. We'll see how things go.

Lets see the cars ! In the 90s I worked at a shop for 6 years that did nothing but FWD Chrysler products. Played around with many of those cars. Shelby Omnis, Shadows, Chargers, Daytonas, etc. Even stuck a Shelby engine, trans & front nose on a Rampage and used it as our shop truck. Interestingly enough the shop owner also sponsored my own racecar but that was a fiberglass bodied 99 Monte Carlo with a Chevy smallblock.

I'll get some pictures uploaded. I currently have a 1987 Daytona Shelby Z, 1988 Shadow ES, 1989 Spirit ES, 1989 Shelby CSX VNT, and a 1991 Daytona Shelby all turbo cars. I also have a 2004 4 door Hemi Ram and a 18ft dovetail trailer for hauling the toys. Oh yeah the wife has a 06 Nissan Murano. That makes 7 cars for my current 3 car garage leaving 4 cars and a trailer outside. I definitely need the room.

That CSX brings back memories to me. I looked at one on a dealers lot here and surprisingly found it in a magazine article. I believe it was titled "Rent a Racer" or something similar. In the article the thrashed the car and that was a concern to me but the dealer broke the deal. He was popular for buying wrecks and rebuilding them as a good used car. I believe that was the first and only car that I could with out a doubt ID as being in a magazine. Don't know if I have that magazine article any more.

All 88 CSX-T's were Thrifty rental cars. It was the "Rent a Rod" for $34.95 a day. They seem to be the worst for wear when you find them as almost all were beaten badly before being auctioned off after the rental program was done. The 89 was always my favorite Shelby car and when this rust free southern car came up for sale locally I had to jump on it. Only 498 were made and I'd bet less than half are still around. They were very advanced for their time. VNT Turbo(Like what's used on the new diesels) Fiber Composite Rims, Recaro Seat options, performance suspension, 175HP and 205ft/lbs of torque 4 cylinder. This one is next on my list for a rotisserie restoration.

Very cool stuff. Brings back good memories of working for a guy who was also a good friend. Hard to complain about a boss who loved to cook and would have the guys who worked for him come in the house at lunchtime for a home cooked meal.. every single day. Sadly he passed on a couple months ago. There were 3 of us working there that messed with racecars and he sponsored all of us. One of the guys had an ACR Neon he bought new just to race it and ran it on the Mt Washington (NH) hillclimb among other places. Here's 2 of my cars that he sponsored. He paid for alot of parts as well as having his body shop fix it & paint them whenever we had a bad Saturday night.. Looking forward to your garage build.

The rough grade on the driveway is done and the grade for the building is done. I stubbed in a 1" water line 6 feet down to where I plan on having the inside wall for the bathroom and ran it out the side and then up a 2x4 so I can trench it to the well/house when I get to that point. Sounds good, the plan is to have the building up before the snow flies but we'll see how that goes. Should have the foam and pex here by the end of the week or early next week. I should have the concrete quotes by next week also and can get that lined up so they can get the forms in and I can get my plumbing done before getting the foam and pex down. Then hopefully pour the concrete in the next month. As long as the concrete is down they can do the building whenever.

My dad has a 89 shelby csx #469 that has less than 3000 miles on it. It still smells like a new car inside. He might even be willing to sell it to the right person. Bought it brand new in 1991 from the local dodge dealer who received five of them.

Did the car sit on the lot for that long? I'd love to pick up a low mileage car but I'd imagine the price would be more than I could afford at this point in time. If he ever thinks of selling the car shoot me a PM on it. After I finish the shed I may have a bit more disposable income. I'd also like to find a Consulier GTP at some point in time. I missed the big sale at Mosler a few months ago so I'm probably never going to find one at the prices they were selling at. Oh well.

On a shed related note my tubing and manifolds came in Friday from Blueridge. Was missing 8 of the compression fittings for the 9 port manifold, they had a bag of ten in the box ?. I emailed them so we'll see how long it takes to get fixed.

Here's an overview of my shop, one question I have is should the man door swing right or left? There will be 3 feet on either side of the man door. I was originally thinking of having it swing to the right and have the light switches on the left wall, the only issue I could see with this is the door will be swinging into the garage area. I could have the door swing to the left and it would swing away from the garage area but the light switches would have to be mounted between the overhead door and man door. I guess I could also mount the light switches just inside the door if the door swung right also. Let me know what you think.

There are companies that make heim joint replacement systems or convert to cable. I'd like to find a 86 GLHS once I finish my 89 CSX.

I would have it left hand swing against the side wall. Two reasons, the area between door and side wall is space that won't really be used and 2nd if you swing it the other way, you have the potential of swinging it into a vehicle that is parked there.

My man door is left hand swing toward my mechanical / bathroom wall. The same way I would suggest you do yours.

How wide are your overhead doors? I went 16'w x 14'h. Going wider didn't cost much more.

Doors are 12 wide. I thought about going wider but didn't like the look. I'm in the process of specing overhead doors and have way to many things to consider. The base doors through the builder are R11 with tongue and groove joints. The 4 doors will be about 5200 installed. I can get the same door in a 2 inch which is R14 for about 250 more a door. From there they have another brand with tongue and groove and a rubber seal which will be another 250 a door. I got a quote from overhead door for commercial doors but that was 8200 for the 4 in their thermocore brand. Going to see if they can quote it in a residential version as I don't think I need the ruggedness of a commercial door. Then I'm just waiting on one more quote for cloplay doors. What are your guys thoughts on the extra rubber seal on the tongue and groove. I can see spending the extra 1000 to go from r11 to r14 but the doors with the seal are R12 but have somewhat less air infiltration. LMK what you think

I like the higher r value, mine are r17. Depends on the climate your in and how warm your wanting to keep the building. The 12' wide door will probably work great for you since it appears your into cars. You went tall enough for big trucks and rv's and the 12' is wide enough for them also. We have 12x14's on my dad's shop but backing in the 16' on mine will be much easier. For resale value 14x14 might be a good idea, if that is any concern.

Left swing man door for sure and in WI I would go best R value possible. I have a garage and a "SHOP" both are attached to house. I keep the shop heated but it is not used everday since hear in Iowa the toys do not come out during the winter. Once I get it heated if I am not in and out of the overhead garage doors it stays very comfortable. Insulation is your friend.
