I've been lurking for a while but after spending a few thoroughly enjoyable evenings reading some of the threads here, I thought I'd formally introduce myself.
The name's Don and I'm the guy who runs the website for the 54 Ford Club of America
As you'd suspect, my current project is a 54 Ford. It's a 2 door sedan that I bought in high school in 1986. I'm finally going through it in a comprehensive sort of way and hope to drive it under it's own power around Christmas.
I was raised in the garage of a guy who hotrodded cars in the glory days (the 50's and 60's) and spent my early years and youth at the drag strip. Some of my early memories are of meeting Don Garlits when his whole setup consisted of him, one other guy, a Dodge truck and a trailer. I love the smell of Av Gas mixed with cigarette smoke and burnout smoke and nothing makes me feel more at home than a group of guys with greasy arms and hands who have just pulled a small block out of a donor car.
I was introduced to this website/forum by the guy who goes by the username "hotrodrimer", and I can't thank him enough. It's a superb site and just the forum section on garages alone is worth several wasted evenings with a beer or three.
I love the fact that the members here are so diverse from one end of the spectrum to the other. You have the B'mer guys with the surgical garages all the way to the Po'Folks with the oil stained concrete and homemade workbenches. But ya know what....I love looking at all of the projects and garages. To me, a car guy is a car guy. We get a natural high from tackling a mechanical problem with whatever combination of elbow grease and help that we can muster. And after it's over we're the sort who like to sit in garage and just stare at our "baby" for a long time and just enjoy the site-lines of our ride and the smell of solvent/oil/paint/gasoline/etc.
Please feel free to lurk over at the 54 Ford forums or even join up and post some random stuff. We're a very welcoming group and most of us have another, non-54ford project or three going at any given time.
Live Free or Die,
Don
