That looks like a pretty standard collection for a career mechanic. It's not too flashy, there is a lot of Craftsman and OTC in there.

I would say 50k is on the low end for a good tech who has been in the business for over 10-15 years....

counting the box at full list, its close.

if it is...then i have 100k in tools... with the box maybe 30 (20k in tools, 10k box)

unless that's a canadian accent... maybe inflated prices for tools there!?

I don't doubt around $50k there for insurance purposes. A few grand per year on tools as a pro doesn't seem unreasonable to me either. 50/wk for 20 yrs or 100/wk for 10 yrs. And you could ebay it for half that easy if you took your time.

Maybe.

In almost 4 years, I have collected around $25K in tools including my box. It adds up faster than you think....

I dont see why that is not 54k in tools. If it were all new and not greasy and used and better organized would it be? Some have said there is some craftsman and otc so it cant be 54k, but I also saw a lot of Snap ON, Mac, Matco, and Cornwell in there as well. He has 12k in a tool box alone. Those reciepts add up fast.

Scare yourself.
Add up all the DVD's and CD's in your home....Soon to be obsolete.
Tools add up even quicker but at least they will always have a use.

I scared myself good when I added up how much I had spent on car and off-road magazines a few years ago. I didn't really need to read them, all that stuff was on the internet anyway. I stopped buying them right then.

Tools are an investment, a lifetime purchase most of the time. Not money spent, its money used.

I used to work very close to a Dunkin Donut shop and had an average of 6 lg coffees a day during the work week. I'm a coffeeholic! I added it up once and bought a good coffee maker and started buying 2lb cans off coffee after that. It's amazing how fast things add up!

I dont care how much it's wroth. At least by looking at the stuff we all know that those tools have seen a lot of use, some pretty hard. It's not a trophy box. Which makes me happy.

54k or whatever that's still a damn impressive tool collection and box. When he opened the top drawer my jaw dropped to the floor..So much room in that thing.

I just don't understand why people pay as much as they do for the box. It doesn't make you any money, it's just a box.

These guys work on autos day and night. Im sure when they are off they have family bothering them to fix their car. Its just like having a nice bed. You're spending a third of your life in a bed sleeping so why buy a cheap mattress? Same principle with a full time mechanic.

it's just me. I would have whole bunch of good tools, a cheaper box, and bunch of money in the bank.
KRL1023 + end cab is $12500, add tax and interest, that's close to $15k:shocking:.

A tool truck box at full retail is still a dumb purchase, IMO. :p Yeah it's nice, but it's still just a place to hold tools... any quality box with enough space will let you work just as efficiently. At least reading the comments on the vid it sounds like he worked a deal on that thing, I saw some deals in the toolbox truck thread that would make me wonder if I'd be stupid NOT to buy it.

I'm looking at upgrading from my decent $400 Waterloo-made Husky to a KRL, and man, I can barely stomach good used prices on them. Hey, at least then I could sell it for nearly what I paid, instead of less than half.

Personally, I think Snap On makes the best or maybe one of the best tool boxes for sale. But, No way I'd spend that kind of money on a tool box. I didn't even buy Snap On tools. I used SK mostly and I was a professional body/frame man/fabricator for 45+ years and I never bought a *good* tool box. I have a Snap On small roll cab 5 drawer and open bottom, a York top box 8-9 drawer, a used Snap On side box for free, another roll cab and top about the same size. I don't even know the brand, about craftsman quality. I still have them all and they don't look any worse than the Snap On boxes I have. The box doesn't make the man.

As someone who started with a Craftsman box and then upgraded to a snap on. I can tell ya that using it every day, and putting a lot of stuff in the drawers will make a craftsman box (ball bearing one) fail in short order. Hell the HF tool cart i have now feels more solid then any craftsman box i've ever owned and it cost 1/2 the price. But nothing beat the feel of my Snap on one. No matter how much weight i put in the drawers it felt exactly the same. And in the 2 years I had it It never failed me once. Never even flinched.
But we're kinda gettin off topic here.

I agree, quite the mess. he made the video for insurance purposes. If the drawers are the disorganized, how can he tell if a few tools are even missing ? If you keep a clean and organized box, you don't waste time looking for something and at a quick glance, you can tell if something is missing.

Have they seen alot of hard use or used a few times in a dirty/greasy enviroment and never cleaned ?

Unless the insurance agent is a blood relative I don't see that video as much good. Most of the shots don't show the part numbers on anything, could be Snapon, could be HF.

Maybe the guy is claiming the value going by individual socket etc prices and not sets and not original prices but current list prices.

Even so, I've seem truck brand collection around half that size go for less than $2k.

That looks like a pretty standard mechanic tool set up to me. I was a auto tech for close to 10 years then moved to Deere ag equipment then finally Bobcat. Each move added more and more tools. I also use to do a very healthy side work and have many tools considered shop provided tools and equipment. All said and done, I probably have twice the tool that guy has. Good thing the girlfriend has know idea how much I have invested.
