Thought I'd share a bit since I've found so much useful info here!

My new shop! Those are 14' doors. Halogen high bay lights from green zone led. And my start on organizing my tools and moving stuff in!

I'll try to update as I make progress on getting everything organized and set up.

Great size! Is the wood shop behind the windowed area? Do you have an office or a hangout room in the drywalled area?

I'll get some more pics up soon. The windowed area was supposed to be a gym. It's got a kitchenette, bathroom, a bedroom/office area, and a living room/gym area. My oldest who's in college wants to live there instead of in the house.

The wood shop area is in flux - I'm still laying out the equipment and setting up the dust collection system. Once thats done, and I see how effective the dust collection is, I can decide if I need to mount unistrut to the ceiling and run some sliding "curtains" to help contain the mess. At least that's the idea I have right now.

I'm in SW WA. I'll update my info!

Here's some more pics:

I got the dust collector put together today and I finished some blue pine for the soffits on the house.

The shop is a mess and I had the fire sprinkler company in doing testing before the final sprinkler inspection.

Lights look like they put out a decent amount of light. Why did you go with the UFO style vs linear high bay lights?

Looks awesome! Is this a stick built building? Mind sharing your contractors name? I just bought some property in Winlock and am looking to put a shop up in a few years.

I went with the UFO style because I got a great deal on them. $149 each. They're also super flexible...I didn't hard wire them, they are all plugged in and I can move them where they're needed.

The shop is stick built - and over 300k. I can give you his name if there's a message feature here.

I've been working on the dust collection system and trying to layout everything and then spec all the pipe and fittings. Damned expensive for the good Nordfab stuff. I found a big pile of used spiral pipe and fittings on CL and picked it up for $90. I figure it's worth about $500+ new. I'm going to see if I can make that work.

I'm still debating how to hang the pipe and hide or keep from tripping all over the power cords for the equipment.

I have a lot of Unistrut that I can either suspend from the ceiling - or maybe build a frame around the area to have the pipe hang on. I could run power cords inside the strut...and overhead.

Shop faces West - slightly SW - but we get a lot of sun for most of the day - so much sun that it may get HOT in there in the summer. May need a ceiling fan!

I'll get more pics today - and show the "gym" and "office" area.

Very nice. I'm surprised you decided to start installing systems like the dust collector before final inspection. Ya never know what kind of hard on a inspector might have for certain things. But good luck and keep the pics coming, the shop is very impressive.

Thats a very good point! I think I'll wait and NOT attach anything to the ceiling for the DC until after the occupancy permit!

Here's some shots from today: I move some of the "semi free" spiral pipe I picked up... I'm already regretting it. I found a heck of a deal on Nordfab pipe and I'm ready to step up to the plate and place an order.

Also got some rubber mats from Wilco: 6x4x3/4" = $40 and 4x8x3/4 = $60

If they don't workout in the shop - I'll use them in the gym area!!

The "gym" and "office" area have been sheet rocked, taped & mudded. I'll have to post a couple more pics in the next reply.

The gym has a kitchenette and a 3/4 bath. The office has a storage area with washer and dryer!

I also have a Keg Urinal and Keg Sink that will go in the shop once we get a final.

A crew poured concrete aprons around the shop and a patio for the house yesterday. I've got a house being built at the same time. Here's a couple of shots of the mess!

And the initial run on the new drum sander. I finished sanding all of the blue pine today, and need to poly coat it this week. It goes on all the outside soffits in the back of the house and all the vaults INSIDE the house. Oh and here's the house...from a few weeks ago.

Oh and I picked up a bunch of double unistrut today!! With bases... so I can build a "frame" to hang my new NordFab ductwork for my dust collector! I got the strut wholesale and the nordfab from blast gate co... 35% off. I'll be detailing that set up when I can get to it.

Also picked up a new to me welding table from a custom furniture maker in Portland. Can't wait to start using my new toys.

The 4x6 stall mats work great in a gym. It's what we use. Impressive space

Some updates: A bit of a set back on the nordfab pipe - it all arrived bent to hell. Sent it back and hopefully I'll get undamaged pipe next week.

My unistrut frame is now doubling as a power post to the ceiling... so I can run two 220v lines down for a welder and saw. I have to go get some concrete anchors and maybe a helper to get the posts placed.

My HVAC guy mounted my 250,000 btu reznor this week... I had to return my 400,000 btu unit... it was too big!

The house is being sheet rocked right now stuff seems to be happening faster than ever.

A new saw stop and powermatic jointer are in my immediate future...as is a semi truck load full of live edge white oak! I'm going to make stair treads and a dining room table, and a lot of cool live edge shelves.

I've got a question for you guys - I'm having second thoughts on mounting posts - floor to ceiling... Has anyone had free-hanging 220v drops from the ceiling to their equipment?

Another alternative is to just make a free-standing strut frame (for dust collection pipe) and use it to route an extension cord to the wall.

I guess I don't like the idea of building a free span shop and then putting posts in it just to run power.

Ceiling soft drops are common in industrial settings. If you don't need it you can coil it up in the rafters. Just make sure you have a strain relief on it.

Yes soft drops are common in industrial settings, especially when different supervisors want to change equipment around to improve production. We always ran 3 phase drops along with 110V and air lines together. I believe they couldn't be any lower than 6'4" from the floor. I have done this in my shop and it comes in very handy and eliminates cords and air lines lying on the floor.

Time for an update:
I originally started a thread on my other favorite forum... and I've detailed lots of info there along the way. I came to garage journal to get more specific ideas and feedback on tools, garage set up, and all the other cool stuff here.

Part of the "wood shop plan" was to figure out a way to hang Nordfab pipe for the dust collector. I didn't like the idea of hanging it from a 16' ceiling. So I'm building a framework out of double unistrut. I should be able to complete it tomorrow. 10x20 - bolted to floor. It also gives me a place for those soft ceiling drops for the tools on that side!

The other pics show the outside of the finished shop - and Galvanized gutters! We're supposed to have the outside lights this week. Finish carpenters were doing the trim inside the "gym and office" area today.

The house part - don't remember if I posted pics of that here - Well the inside is in sheetrock.... well mostly in sheetrock.

oh and that other pic? Thats y 17x17 vault. I'm still trying to figure out what to put on the walls. It has a mini split and a heat exchanger.

The shop looks awesome.
House isn't too shabby either.
Any car projects planned for the shop or mostly wood working?

I've had my fill of car projects for a while. I just finished doing a rotisserie restoration that I had going for 6+ years. 1968 california special. I finally had to take it to a shop to get it finished up. (I sold the building it was in - before it was done!)

Awesome shop. I just cant believe you put the compressor smack dab in the middle instead of tucked in a mechanical room.

This really makes me debate dealing with my 2 car attached garage for 3-4 years and moving to a place with more land to get something of this size or putting up a 30x40 (limit w/o a variance) on my one acre.

My compressor is actually very quiet. And if it's running that means I'm usually doing something like grinding, sanding or cutting - and I've got ear plugs in! I'm still debating on getting a maxline air line kit.

I had to get a little creative today and use my scissor lift to help position the 20' long sections of unistrut for my "frame".

It was kinda sketchy as I made all the connections on this thing... I only bolted one post to the floor - the rest were clamped to sawhorses. Without the scissor lift I wouldn't have been able to do this by myself.

My next little project is fitting all the dust collection pipe together and getting my tools set up...and going shopping for a new table saw and jointer.

It's slowly coming together. I got the pipe set up and tested. Room for a new table saw and jointer!

Now I have to work on cleaning everything up and re-organizing before I get my next project going... live edge oak stair treads, Barn doors, & vault room finishing!

Powermatic 8" HH - 2 week wait $2200ish
Grizzly 8" spiral head - digital readout - $2200ish - available now...

Very nice sized shop, I'm a bit jealous of the size.

As for electrical drops, I installed both 220v and 110v for machining equipment when I built my shop as I hate extension cords and especially cords feeding equipment on the floor. I have pictures of the drops and then with the equipment in place in my 50x60x16 Shop/RV Garage build in my signature if you want to take a look, I believe they are within the last 15 pages of the thread or so. I installed some in my last shop as my machine additions grew but in this shop I planned out where I wanted the equipment during the electrical phase so everything was finished off accordingly. I kept them just high enough off the floor so when the equipment was not in place yet I could barely walk underneath and yet easily reach the plugs.
