Hello all,
First post here. I am getting ready to redo my garage floor. I want to use Epoxy Coat. I see they have kits at 250 sq ft intervals. I have 560 sq ft of garage floor. Do you guys think that a 500 sq ft kit would stretch to fit 560 sq ft? I don't want to buy another kit and only use a little bit of it.

Also, do you guys recommended using the clear kit over it.

Thanks

I would spend the extra couple bucks to get the third kit. Assuming you have 2 rows of cinder blocks around the perimeter like I do, use the extra to paint the cinder blocks around the sides.

Extra is always better...
The clear is a must. It adds protection to the epoxy below. Without the clear your floor will look pretty bad in just a few months. Its worth the money.

By the way, you can stretch the epoxy. Most epoxy thins with Xylene, you can use this to thin out the mix and make the kit go a little further.

in the retail paint business, we always push three kits for a two car garage. paint is lost on the brushes, rollers, and pail.

I stretched 780 sq/ft of epoxy coverage to 960 - I don't recommend it. I thinned 10% to get there and almost didn't make it, could have gone 15% which would have made application a little easier. There are places - of course - where it's well under the 5-7 mils of recommended dry thickness but it'll be fine for what I'm doing. I used a 3/4 nap roller and worked my known high traffic areas heavy and pushed the rest.

I pushed a 400 sq/ft application to 480 with no thinning on my old shop and I had no issues after 12 years of use.

I do not use clear coats, but that's just me. It will always be better with a clear on top.

Consider all the work you have put into this floor and the possibility of having to do it all again. Epoxy manufacturers spend untold hours testing and retesting and trying to stretch coverage as far as possible. Unless a manufacturer tells you otherwise, never... ever.... get away from their directions. And if they tell you its ok, get it in writing!

I would go with 1 & 1/2 kits. If you get 1 kit + a touch up kit. that covers exactly 560SF, this leaves no room for imperfect concrete or waste. If you need more help with this, please give me a call.

Really? I thought that Epoxy Coat specifically did not need a clear coat..........

"Epoxy-Coat" products may not. I don't know, I don't install that brand. What I can tell you is clear coat adds protection to epoxy surfaces...I lay 6-8 mills of clear on my average job. This leaves the customer with a layer of protection from scratches, dings, tiremarks, and dirt that can affect the color coat...So if you want the floor to look good and hold up to abuse the clear is a "must"
