I have outgrown my toolbox and want to upgrade to a good quality 72" toolbox. I found this one that I like, but got to thinking that for $5K I should try to find out what else I could get for that price. Give me some ideas for other good quality 72" toolboxes I should look at before making up my mind.

We don't have Craig's list around here, and I don't feel like buying something this expensive sight unseen off of ebay.

I'm waiting until the end of the month to buy the 56" version of that, like you, not much Craigslist stuff without traveling 100 miles. Looks like a whole lot of bang for the buck, unless I happen to run across a Snap On at a great deal.

I like the layout of the Viper 72" the best, since I prefer two wider banks of drawers over two narrow ones. Only problem is that a matching top box is no longer available. I'm also not a huge fan of the detents on these boxes. Also, Strictly offers this same box with a stainless top under the Extreme brand name.

I have this box in red and branded Craftsman (which is no longer offered). It's a solid box and the 30" depth makes a world of difference. I'd highly recommend finding a 30" deep box over 20" or 24".

Boy, I understand you don't have CL, but you can get a GREAT used Snap-On box for way less, if you can find one on the secondary market.
Find your Snap-On rep, I bet he has a repo that he'd make you a heck of a deal on.

I got this "Electric Orange" one, no damage at all (the dark spot on the bottom is a shadow), for $3,000.

Good Luck!

BTW, not sure where you are located, but I have a buddy, here in Michigan, that has a sweet RED SO box for sale, I think he's asking$5,600...
He's also got a black one, not including the stainless top, for $2,200...

What is your location?

For 5K you could have 14 of these HF boxes.

I would jump on a deal like you got on that orange Snap On toolbox. I'll start looking at the online classifieds. Maybe I can drive to look at some that are not toooo far away. I'm 250 miles from the Salt Lake City market, and 200 miles away from the Las Vegas market.

Thanks, I like the layout of that toolbox. The problem with the toolbox I have now is not enough deep drawers.

It sounds like a BEAUTIFUL place to live, but I see your dilemma on finding something locally, I'm sure you'd have to make a pretty good road trip, no matter what.

Good Luck!

Have you tried reaching out to Strictly Tool Boxes? Sometimes they have scratch and dents or demo units discounted...

Very nice box, but $5k is a lot of cabbage. You definitely have a lot of choices with that budget. You will get quite a few opinions on here, some very good, but at the end of the day the only one who has to live with the decision is you.

Good luck, I think i could live with that box.

If you have any tool truck reps in the area, like Zoomie said, they might have something. The logistics of finding and hauling a box 200 + miles, it would have to be a screaming deal to make it worth the headaches.

There's a reason so many Snap On reps have repossessed boxes--the original buyer couldn't afford the darn thing, even WITH discounts.

I'm not the original buyer, I made a sound investment and paid cash...
I can't help that people buy stuff they can't afford, LOL!:lol_hitti

Brand new, there is not much close to that box for that price. I have the bottom 72" with the single long draw on top. I have had it a few years now..pretty amazing box. I paid 2,700 for it. The only thing that came close was a decent used Snap On double for that price, and even that was iffy. Plus it was used AND smaller. I rather have slightly less quality and more room.

a few considerations:
Shop box or work box?
Do you ever have to move it?
What options do you want or do you want drawers only?

For home garage use. I am a serious tinkerer, and am at the point in my life where I can afford a better toolbox
No
I don't need storage cabinets with the box, I already have those.. The one thing I don't care for on that toolbox though, is the detent closure on the drawers.

Find your Snap-On rep, I bet he has a repo that he'd make you a heck of a deal on.

I won't say a single negative thing about the Extreme 72" box, nor an ill word about Strictly Toolboxes. I bought a 72" x 30" Tool Vault Elite from Strictly Toolboxes, and I love it.

That said, if you've got a budget of nearly $6,000 for a new box, I would certainly track down a Snap-on dealer and see what kind of deals he can get you - and not just on a repo'd box.

Prices have gone up a fair amount since I talked to one of my local Snap-on reps a few years ago, but when retail on a KRL1033 was around $11K, he was able to get my price down to right around $6K based on various promotions and "trade-in" credit.

For better or worse, I wasn't in the position to make the deal on it, and I ended up getting my Tool Vault Elite a couple years later, but, there's a LOT of wheeling and dealing to be done around prices of new Snap-on boxes - makes me shake my head every single time I see a CL ad trying to sell a box for 85% of retail, and them claiming they paid full retail for a box. :D

If the dealer has repo'd or traded-in boxes, there's likely even deeper discounts to be had.

With that kind of budget, include the Lista boxes in the universe you are considering. If these prices are current, they are in the ball park. http://listabox.com/model-750/triple-bank/config.php or the next model up http://listabox.com/model-900/triple-bank/config.php

Great idea!

There is a seller (liquidator???) on eBay that lists old "Boeing" (I believe...), Lista boxes in great shape, that usually have QUALITY vises (typically WILTON) attached, that will ship (freight, if you have a forklift available) and they typically sell reasonably..

Take care!

BTW: They ship from out West, freight might not be too bad...?

I just went to the main on line classifieds for this part of the country. One Snap On toolbox that has no top tool chest, for $5000. One Matco 4S that looks like it would work, but no top tool chest to go with it, for $6000. Given the choice between those two, and the one I linked at the start of this thread, I'd pick the Extreme tools 72" one I linked. Way more for the money if you ask me.

Thanks for the input. I've looked at that Homak 72" toolbox, and I like it. How heavy duty is it? Do the drawers sag if loaded up with impact sockets? What drawer closure system do they use, detent, or latch? Does it feel solidly built?

Extreme boxes are great for cost, last well and hold reasonable value, latches are way better than detents though.
Used snapon would be nice but chances of finding what you want at price you like within travel range acceptable and time frame acceptable is unlikely, good deals mean waiting for 6months-year probably !
