Any diesel guys got a tip to get this pipe in and out without pulling trans or lifting cab. The bolts were a ***** but now I cannot get it out! I disconnected down pipe but it will not come out in one piece either! It's on a friends truck and I am just trying to fix his exhaust leak for him on the cheap

Be a bit more specific about which pipe your talking about. No pipe either in the intake or exhaust side of the turbo should be difficult to remove. Ive ran into exhaust pipes in the past that were tough to remove on older vehicles but your 6.4 is far from old. When the ID of the larger and the OD of the smaller are too close within tolerance a dremel tool with a cutting wheel can cut a small slit on the OD to allow it to slide off. An exhaust clamp will easily close the gap when reinstalling. Also go to powerstrokenation.com and sign up. Your friend will appreciate the extensive knowledge of Ford experience straight from Ford guys. Strokinsmokin sent ya!!
Regards,
Jesse

As a ford diesel tech, they can be a royal ***** to do inframe. you are talking about the passenger side up pipe? Drop the trans is about the best way to get them out. Have heard of guys getting them out without pulling trans, but I will believe it when I see it. You can pm me if you have any more questions.

Deepsea, the bolts he is talking about are interference thread, and when they are torqued down to spec, they are very hard to get out using hand tools.

Bolts are out, the pipe is stuck in between the engine and the body.

My knuckles are still injured from this weekends exhaust work on my 7.3 diesel. I installed an FTE resonator/muffler. Exhaust work always *****.

Why on earth must you take apart the exhaust on such a new truck? Did it start leaking all by itself or was the truck in a wreck?

I had this exact conversation about this Ford Truck issue with one of our heavy equipment mechanics as we were looking at the engine that is half in the cab of the truck. He said they raised the cab to get it out. At that point I mentioned I would be looking at sawing away the firewall if I was faced with that wonderful design. :willy_nil

Pulling the transmission or even the engine would seem like a tough job for any kind of exhaust repair. Not sure what the engineer was thinking about when he drew this one up. :dunno:

I have no solutions just sending along my sympathies................

I'm assuming turbo on? I've done a few but its been awhile and I'm almost positive the turbo was off. Replace it with 6L manifold and aftermarket uppipe/wastegate to fix this issue. The problem normally comes from the bend the uppipe has to make at the manifold, then it blows right around the middle to top of the head, most I've seen were against the motor where it blew. Have fun :D

Thank you sargent this is is what I get when assuming the exhaust packaging is alike in most diesels. The bay in my 6.0 is big enough to set up a hammock and wrench in peace. Point taken it took me 8 hours to upgrade my oil cooler, egr, injection pressure regulator, clean the veins on the turbo and put her back. You would be surprised what comes out of the intake manifold when scrubbed down after 180xxx miles with a functional egr

I got it done by lifting rear of cab, came out the top, next one will go way faster! Fine tooth ratchet and so 10mm socket handy. Made a new truck out of it,was blown at the flex joint with 110k

Along the motor mount idea, drop the mount for the trans, put a floor jack under it and let it sag back. Talked with another tech at work, said you can ge the down pipe out with out pulling trans. Never done it myself so can't say for sure. Did you get it out Oilslick?
