Just a warning we made a similar jig and a patent troll somehow found out and tried to sue us over it. Ended up having to buy all his tools just to shut him up and cost us a pretty penny. We weren't selling our jig either just using it in our shop to fix these same engines.

Seriously, for a piece of flat stock with some holes drilled into it and various sets of alignment bushings?

I think its a bluff. The same concept has been previously used 1 zillion times in industry to create a set of precision holes on a machine too big to take to a shop....

Yeah it was a total BS job to force us to buy his stuff or we had to go to court which would have cost more in the long run, win or lose. Patent trolls are a real PITA.

For 5.4 gas or 6.4 diesel. This is for the diesels and as far as I know no one makes them yet...

We were doing 6.0 and 6.4 diesels. Not trying to scare anybody just a heads up on people like that who are just out to rip off people. I don't want to give the company name because I don't want any more trouble with them, but they are claiming patents on drill jigs for a large number of engines.

I get you were probably just trying to avoid the hassle of going to court but I would think a local news source would find this story very interesting. If not a conversation with the local DA may help make that issue go away. As long as you are not trying to copy the tool and sell it there is no reason anyone can copy a patented product for personal use. I suppose it could be a grey area if you are a shop and duplicate said product to use in your shop but even then you are not selling their patented product.

Yeah I really don't see how that's a patentable idea at all. It's just a basic fixture plate that should have "prior-art" going back hundreds of years.
