So the other day I went to go use my 7/16 combo wrench, which happens to be a USA craftsman and low and behold it is a six point box end... So I looked at all my other wrenches and I also have a six point box end 3/8 combo wrench. These to me or not ideal but I already on them and very rarely use them.

From collecting my set over the years I too have some 6pt box ends SAE. I use mostly metric so I don’t use those wrenches often. Often wondered if they were industrial?

Did you happen to purchase them at a Sears Outlet? They had dozens of the USA 6 point sets on clearance at my Sears Outlet a few years ago, and I almost picked up a set myself, but decided they would probably just take up more space in my tool box and not get used much, if at all.

I bought them several years ago at a regular sears. Before they went down hill. I may have just not looked close enough but till recently i didn’t even know that combo wrenches came in 6 pt

They were offered. Normal stock in stores. Not "industrial" specific at all. I have most of a 1/4 - 1" set in 6pt. Probably 25yrs old. Mass-produced, poor ergonomics, good old trusty, but no better than anything else, Craftsman.

I have a much newer 3/4" I picked up online that's comparably much softer.

A lot of companies used to do that, even with sockets in the smaller sizes. Not sure how much of an issue it will really cause you considering it sounds like you have had the set for several years and you just noticed it now. A solution is to search e-bay for the 12 point version, as they are out there.

When the were closing a Sears Hardware store I bought a complete set of 6 point SAE combination wrenches to add to my 12 point wrenches. Great to have a second set !

I have a few of the old Craftsman 6 pointers. Ever time I inadvertently grab one, I think of all the six point devotees here and curse the thing.

Twelve pointers are so much easier to use.

"12 pointers are easier to use" Unless the corners of the nut or bolt is rounded. That's when you can use the 6 point. Why not have a set of both? I do.

I have standard and metric. 1/4 or 5/16 through 15/16, maybe it went through 1" and I lost it? Metric is 6 or 7mm through 19mm. Unless I am dealing with a rusty or seized bolt/nut, I don't touch them. PITA to use.

I have a full sets of Craftsman raised panel 6 point combination wrenches in SAE and Metric. I purchased the wrench sets in the early 1990's and they've been in my tool box ever since, and they have come in handy MANY times.

The 6 and the 12 pt have their place. Same for sockets. I;ve gone long times using the 12s but once in a while the 6 is needed. If a nut is TIGHT then the 6 is my go to. Once loose then use the 12 if clearance is tight.

I recently went and bought a 6 pt socket because the 12 was on the loose side and chewing up the barring drive on my diesel. The 6 pt stopped the chewing and wobble.

They have their uses.
