I'm limited to a 600sqft garage and a overall height of 18ft. I would really like to put in a two post lift for service work and side jobs plus work on my race car and other vehicles. I will also need to lift a full size crew cab diesel truck.

I would like to know if anyone has a two post lift with this amount of room and how it is working out for you. I will be putting my air compressor and some other large items in a small attched shed to get them out of the main garage. Some of my concerns are that the lift will need to be placed more in the center of the garage limiting my other work space. I really dont want to do that so Im trying to think of a way to place my square footage to work best for me. I also have a 72''x30'' snap on tool box that I need to package aswell plus would like a small work bench. I guess Im trying to put 10lbs of **** in a 5lbs bag... I would also like to have storage above one bay.

Any suggestions? Im open to anything as long as I dont go over the 600sqft. I cant wait to get plans together and start building!

Thanks in advance
Brandon

I was thinking about a 24wide by 25 deep. Thinking maybe about putting one post real close to the wall. not sure how good that would work

I've got two two post lifts in a 22 x 28 garage. One I use for storage and one for working on cars. Not ideal but I've sure got my. Ones worth out of them. I think 24 x 25 would be more than workable.

Hello from another Buckeye! If you place the one post close to te wall....what's "close"? How will you adjust the lift arms? Without a whole lot of thought on my end, my first think would be to put it in the middle so you would have ample room all around the vehicle. The 24' is the width? I'd bowmen a 12' wide door centered and that would give you 6' on each side for 'walk around' room and storage, tool boxes, etc.as always....justly opinion and thought.

The only issue that I have with putting it in the center is that I have to also store my 72 Nova and would like to have a flat area to work in.

Will this be an attached or detached garage?

When planning an adition to my garage I found I was already over limit on garage square footage

But

I was allowed to double the floor space of the house.

So the plans were drawn up to make a portion of the garage living space and then do an adition on the garage. The plans were aproved. After it's completed and signed off by the inspector, some interior walls will move a little :)

Haha. I tried the "attached" method but my set backs changed and I did not like the lication. This will be an detached garage. I'm trying to get a lean to approved for one side. Once everything calms down after the build I might box that in.

My lifts are right up against the outside walls. With the thickness of the stem wall and the footprint of the bases, there is 6 inches of space between the lift and the wall. I down all types of front end work on them and even dropped a whole K member. I've never had a problem with being close to the wall. About the only thing that I have found I might not be able to do would be able to pull an axle shaft.

If your lift is comparable in width as mine, I ran some numbers to help you (maybe). With the lift centered on a line 6 foot in from the side, you would have roughly 10 inches between the wall and the outside of the lift post. If you put the inside edge of the lift on the centerline of the building you would have roughly 19 inches between the lift post and the wall and still have 12 foot of clear space on the other side for a second vehicle. With this spacing I think you would be able to get an axle shaft out as you have the 19 inches, plus the 8 inch thin lift post please the distance between the inside of the lift post of the car of up to 16 inches for a total of 43 inches.

The other thing I would look at is are your limits set at 600 sq foot of footprint or finished interior space? Could be a significant difference there as well. A 24 x 25 pad with 2 x 6 walls would have an interior space of 23 x 24. I'd try to work it where it is finished interior space of 24 x 25.
