60’s Remline Box - side shelf?

I recently picked up an old Remline box that belonged to my grandfather. The top is 64 and the bottom 65. I’ve looked through many posts on here and have not found any pics or discussions on any side shelves. The one I have has some sort of side shelf and from the paint and screws it appears to be factory. Just wondering if anyone can confirm if it is a factory option or just something my grandfather attached along the way. If it’s not original I may not restore it but if it is I probably will restore it along with the box.

Thanks for the help

Nice box. I have the same top and bottom box and interestingly enough I have a side tray that looks just like that one although I got it separately. I assumed that it was a generic add-on tray. I will be following this thread to hear the verdict and possibly add it to my remline box.

The paint seems to match perfectly, even the underside that saw less UV is the same red as some of the other less exposed areas. BUT that doesn’t mean much because gramps was a phenomenal auto painter and could have easily matched it.

Just for the heck of it, look closely at the underside of the try for a stamped Mfr and/or part number. Might be kind of fine/light stamping. I have virtually the identical one from Snap-on (old) and it is lightly stamped on the underside if I recall.

I have the same rig that is 100% original. Mine has a handle where you have a shelf. It's likely an add-on just like the roller assembly he added.

There are no handle holes on the shelf side that I can see, but there are on the left side. Its also hard to see but the top bracket hangs on the lip, its not bolted on. I'm not at all familiar with older boxes, did most of the brands have a similar thin edge at the top?

I agree that it looks like an add on, but its weird how perfect the paint matches.

I guess I'm more or less wondering was it an aftermarket part that was made by Remline or at least sold by Remline distributors or something completely unrelated that was picked up along the way.

It has to come off anyways so I'll take it off and get a good look at the underside.

A lot of us had that same folding shelf back before giant tool boxes became the norm. The color looks the same because almost everyone in the shop had a red tool box and the difference in shade between New Britain, Snap On, etc has been lost to the ages. I used to work out of a NB top, Snap On middle and a Craftsman roller with that side shelf and except for the age staining the paint colors could have been identical. I don't remember where I got that folding shelf but have a thin memory of buying it from the Sears store, but it could just have easily come off of the tool truck which at that time was an independent guy carrying mostly SK and Cornwell tools. I think I know where I stored it so I'll check for a manufacturer mark. As was pointed out, the older cabs had a lip that would support this shelf and the newer ones don't so I haven't looked at mine in years.
Was your shelf originally part of the roller cabinet? No. Was it purchased at the same time and from the same seller as the roller? Quite possibly. Was it added on later when he started to outgrow the cabinet? Very likely. Did it cease to be folded up and down and gain it's own permanent collection of tools after a couple of months? Mine did!
