After alot of work, it is up. I have a 40x60x15 building with two 13x13 doors. Originally I had ordered a 30x50 2 weeks before Katrina hit. They put my shop on hold after that and then Rita hit our area and I canceled it. It was actually a good thing because Rita cleared more property for me :) With quite a few other things happening and delaying it, we got it up. Now the packing and organizing begins. I am very interested in Shelving ideas. I need some heavy duty stuff like the shelves used in Lowes or Sam's but they want big money for those. Has anyone built and storage or shelving that they are proud of? I sure would like to see a pic of that. below are a few pics of mine.

All I can say is "NICE". I wanna big building tooooo!!! I look forward to the day that I can drive into my garage and turn the vehicle around without backing down to the road to do it. LOL!!!
I built my overheads out of 1 x 12's. We have a few places around that doors can be bought super cheap. They are back alley cabinet shops and they get doors and cabinets by the semi loads and sell them for nickles on the dollar. Drawer fronts are like $3.00 and doors are $5.00 apiece for any size. And they come already stained and varnished, and are solid oak, maple, hickory, etc.. So if you have any place around like that, you can build some nice benches and cabinets on the cheap.

Pallet racking is usually distributed by warehouse supply companies although there is usually a lot of used stuff around at auctions.

At the school where I work, we bought some pallet shelving from a home improvement center that was going out of business. It usually sells for pennies on the dollar. We also bought a pallet stacker to put skids of paper up on the racks. Keep your eyes open for a liquidation and be willing to travel a bit; you might get lucky.

Yeah I would really like to find something about 42" wide. I have to Threewheels I would like to store on the top. Then park my ATV's under them. Trying to think of ways to use the vertical space:D

I did the same as 6768 except it was a furniture store warehouse liquidation. I picked up a lot of heavy shelving for next to nothing. It was used to hold up sofas, dressers, etc... so it was built heavy. I use it to store complete engines, transmissions, whatever and it has held up really well. I guess bottom line is look for auctions in your area of people closing out warehouse type structures of any kind. After all, you could always use a good forklift or two!! :bounce:

Yes, I did notice that. My red Scrambler sits where my shop is going to be, just to get the neighbors used to it. I think with tax return and the sale of my YJ I'll have enough to get the pad poured on my measly little 25x38 shop (did I meantion I'm totaly jealous of 40x60). But just the excavation and pad has taken me a year to come up with the money.

Nice building: I envy the space.

Have a look on CraigsList. Often people offer the outtake cabinets from their kitchen and bath remodels. Many times for free.

Another idea is to visit the manufacturing districts near you. Some times they have the heavy shelving that you crave stored outside rusting away. They might let it go cheap to get it out of their storage yards.

Good Luck,

Well I ordered my shop original on August 23, 2005 and asked it to be dropped during the first week of October. It was a 30x50. Notice the date. One week before Katrina. When she blew in they asked if they could put the order off till November. Fine with me It would give me more time to clear the trees and build the ground up for the slab. The Rita hit my area and took care of the tree problem but caused a few others. I cancled the shop. 2 years almost to the day they began the slab. It was screwed up so bad that it was unusable. So, I had to go through 6 months of arguements and battles over it. It almost went to court when the contractor, who I believe really wanted to make it right, walk away and I hired another guy. He fixed everything and erected the shop. The thing is way taller than I had planned and that was my mistake. It sure is nice to have but it looks like Gymnasium on the property.

There's a simple solution for THAT... Put a Lift in on front or side, and deck the rest over for a "mezzanine". Double your space, same price.

Of course it does nothing for your exterior problem, but it WILL make you FEEL better about it!!!

BTW, is this Matt from Trout Industries?

Dan,

BM2 is right gotta go with a lift in that space...I know who has an extra ;-). Also the mez or loft for storage is also a great way to go.

I am going to auction this week that is suppose to have the steel I need to build the Mezzanine. Already planning for that. Don;t really need a lift right now. I built some 3 foot tall laminated blocks for the Unlimted build, It was all I needed.

No this is not Matt. I do know who you are asking about though. Great Guy.

That is a real sturdy building, having 3 wall girts plus the one at the eave. My 16 ft high eave building has only two. Probably has to do with the location and potential of hurricanes. I'll bet you have a pretty high wind speed requirement for buildings.

You will love the height. It stays cooler in the summer, and you can walk around with a 10 ft piece of PVC or conduit or whatever and not hit anything.

Here is my building construction web page. With a link to the second page.

Wow Charles, Very nice. That is probably what will be built in mine in a year or two. I have a neighbor with an old Champ that I would like to restore. I have been designing and build Model RC planes since I was 5 and with the help of a very qualified friend of mine would like to try it full scale. You live in one nice spot. Being able to have your wings at your back door...TOO COOL!!!!

I was going to suggest you use some landscaping to make it appear smaller, but I see you've poured the outside slab right up to the building.

You could still get some big concrete planters and put them out front with some small ornamental trees or something.

Yes I plan to plant some flowering pears along the side to help bring the roof down. The front is not bad in the summer the trees will be full and you will not be able to see it very good. Also, yes I am sure the 3 wall girts has something do with the Hurricane ratings. This one is rated and stamped but I did not need it to be. The only thing it helps is resale of the house.

Pallet racking is easy to find on the used/surplus market. Keep you eyes on the local auction sites.
I have even pulled it out of dumpsters in an office park. (But that was before the price of scrap got to where it is.)
