This is a '66 Nova race/ street car that I am working on for a customer. He plans to run it in the 255-15 tire size Rodz class.

Here is the car:

Here are the Tires:

The car will have a '69 Chevelle 12 bolt that will be narrowed to 54 1/2". The rear end will get a set of 33 spline Dutchman axles:

This is the housing end that uses a 9" Ford style bearing to eliminate the C-clips that retain the stock axles:

The length of housing tube and the old bearing end are cut off:

The new housing end is aligned with a housing jig:

The new housing end is welded in place:

The tires fit into the wheel wells, but the left side tire was rubbing the leaf spring. I decided that the best plan was to in-board the leaf springs about 2" to gain the clearance needed.

I cut out the stock front spring perches and built some out of 4" x .125" steel plate. The new spring boxes would better clear the Cal-Tracs bars that the car will be running:

I bent up some offset shackles to move the rear of the leafs in-board as well:

The new spring boxes are used to anchor the 2 x 2" x .120" wall subframe connectors:

Since the car will also be getting an 8 point roll bar, I will be tying the rocker area to the subframe connectors with a piece of 2" x 4" x .120" rectangular tubing "kickers". The roll bar will weld to the 2 x 4 tubing. This is far stronger that welding the roll bars to floor plates most roll bar utilize.

A couple of slots are cut into the floor to allow the 2 x 4 kickers to protrude through:

The kicker will need some profiling to make it fit into it's new home:

Herer is the kicker in place ready to be welded:

Here is the kicker welded into the rocker, the subframe connector and the floor:

JoshsNova018.jpg

The roll bar has the cross bar installed, and a couple of diagonals are cut to brace the roll bar to the subframe connector:

A 1/8" thick floor plate is welded to the top of the rear frame rail for the rear diagonal to weld to:

The front frame rails receive the same 2" x 4" x .120" "kickers" that weld through the floor pan and to the rocker panels:

The rear roll bar finally gets welded to the rear kickers:

The rear diagonals get welded to the roll bar, and to the rear floor plates:

The upper "halo" bar is then notched and welded to the rear roll bar hoop:

The front uprights are notched and welded to the halo bar and to the kicker:

A 1 1/4" x .120" diagonal is welded into the rear hoop. Though not required by NHRA, is is useless to race witout this brace as the rear roll bar is not very strong without it:

The bottom part of the diagonal is welded to the bottom part of the cage:

Since the car will see some street duty, a pair of swing out door bars would be needed. These are the male and female swing out clevises that are used. A piece of roll cage tubing is notched to the angle of the door bar and welded to each side to the clevises:

With the clevises tack welded to the front upright and the roll bar, the straight piece of the door bar is measured and fit into place:

Everything is now welded. The bottom part of the door bar swings on a bolt with a self locking nut. The top is held in place with a quick release pin:

The door bar swings out nicely:

Nice work.... I just started work on my 67 and I like the idea of the 9 bearings eliminating the c-clips. Im so glad I saw that before I finished my housing. Looks like we are doing some of the same work with the cage, sub frame connectors, and narowing a rear.
Ill be finishing mine up with a staight axle front. How bout your customers? Also Im still gona try n squeze in a rear seat around the cage. Gota have something to hall the kiddos around in.
