$675 a square just for material? Siding

Hey guys. Thinking of what siding to go with once garage is built. I LOVE the cedar shake look and want to buy fiber cement. I have installed James hardie lap boards in the past but really want to go Nichiha cedar shake look. It is 1/2" thick. I called a company in North carolina who stains them and they want $6.75 a sq ft for stain $5.75 for painted! I am thinking of buying primed and paint is a beautiful blue. Any of you guys used this stuff? Real cedar and Vinyl is out of the question

Problem is I never installed real cedar, the 2 layers of shingles and the individual pieces scare me.

There's nothing really scary about installing cedar shingles or shakes, it's just time consuming.

Having said that there's quite a wide variation in price for cedar shingles, depending on what grade you buy. The really nice stuff can be spendy, the cheap stuff will be pretty rough. You get what you pay for.

The price of many siding materials is outrageous, especially those that still need periodic maintenance and painting.
It may be hard to believe, but you can get real SLATE siding which is the ONLY zero maintenance product I have found, for about 20-30% less than those numbers you quoted.
It is very easy to install with just a couple tools, and looks so much better than ANY painted or finished product.

I haven't used them and have no idea about the cost, but I have seen ads over the years for cedar shake panels, made with real cedar. The idea is speed, and a better job--I helped on exactly one large shake roof, and there is a lot of decisions on sorting culling and trimming made by the installer to get a good job, so I'm not sure I'd want to jump in with pallets of expensive material without having had some experience...

The second thing--if you have carpenter bees and birds that go after the bee larvae, use a semi-solid stain. At least in my experience--our house has board and batten cypress that the carpenter bees loved until I stained it all with a fairly dark semi-sold--no more bee and woodpecker holes.
