I would put up a nice large bright pink sign in my yard that read.
"I'm not kidding"
"I'm building"

I think I would paint the building pink and let the neighbors live with that.

I have a piece of land in a subdivision I inherited, they bust my chops on mowing it, I think I will turn it into a pet cemetery... "Here rests Fluffy.." see how they like that!

No new updates on the building as we all had to work this week. But the woman next store was hard at work at on her slander campaign.

Picture078.jpg

I guess the zoning laws are only fair when they apply to her.

Picture077.jpg

Its hard to see the sign in back but it says "As tall as a Mountain"

Thanks for all the great comments

This is getting hysterical. Does it meet all the zoning regulations? If it does, what is she doing?? You probably would have some kind of action against her for all the hassle......but, why bother. She's not going anywhere anyway.

You could always start a military vehicle museum on your front lawn.......I'm sure they would go well with the garage (and you have one already)! :)

See ya. :hellobye:

Yes, we have fallowed all zoning codes and have exceed many of the building regulations with the construction we have used. We have got all the required permits, drawings, and inspections. Also when she started complaining I wanted to make sure all my numbers where right for my coverage ratio. When we went to measure of my survey markers on her side of the property some how my survey markers came up missing. But really it doesn't matter because I get my shop and she gets to go crazy.

Thanks

To keep with your neighbor's Christmas theme you might consider a giant Grinch statue pointing at your neighbor's house.

Great looking shop, I'm turning green. I'd look forward to the mental torture that you could inflict on the old bag, Flash up the drag car at 8:01 sunday morning, pay the Angels to return her signs, but your probably doing the best thing already by ignoring her, if it was me I'd make it my mission to send her over the edge, how come it's her? Did she kill her husband from bitching? Sounds like she's the reason they invented the ***** Slap.
Great job, we need more pics

First off, congrats on building a badass shop/barn. If you are meeting all the codes, what is you neighbors complaint? Did you get some sort of variance to build the garage?

Ever see that place a neighbor complained about so the builder made a window facing his property in the shape of a hand flipping the bird? I think it's on this site someplace...

Just a thought...

Are the signs on her property or yours? If she missed the property line, just yank 'em & toss 'em back over on her side of the line.

First of all, nice build.
I hope you live there long enough to enjoy it well

Second.
In you neighbors defense, judging by the PICs in your first posts, 68x48x20 does seem a bit out of scale for the neighborhood.

But I am a big owners rights backer.
As long as you are going to use it and you have crossed your T’s and dotted your I’s enjoy it.
But don’t be surprised if there are some changes made in the land use rules in the near future.

keep going! Happy Holidays to your family!
That shop is great. Who cares how big, as long as you can, and your within your legal rights keep at it. Cant wait to see the finished product to get some ideas.

ignore the signs, seems like you have law on your side - and thats enough!

To set Mrs. Busybody over the edge, have a friend stop and get out some blueprints. Start moving your arms like you are going to add on already, here and there. Then get some orange paint and mark off a couple of large squares on the lawn on her side of the new building. That ought to give her 24 hours of things to do with phone calls, gossip, and mental anguish.
It's too bad you can't temporarily hook up some motion sensing lights or such where she is placing the signs, then blast off a shotgun when the lights turn on.
Also change the Santa sign to read that all you want Santa to do is piss off the neighbor woman.

if you don't mind answering, where at is this? I see the tecumseh pumping truck, so i would imagine around there somewhere.

It's crazy that your neighbors are being that annoying. As long as it's nicely done, and you're using the property? They should be happier than when they had a crappy repo sitting there...

Brings back memories for me... because of me and my fight with my town over size of my garage 30x80. My lawyer basically re wrote there rule books on my dime ..the poor next guy in my town now can only build a secondary building no bigger than the foot print of the outside measurement of his house .. so if your house is 20x 30 thats all your can build your garage.. if you want to go bigger you need to apply for a variance. it used to be as long as you met the 10 ft off sets you were golden;) NOT ANY MORE.

Yeah.
There are city or town rules.
Then county rules.
But in unincorporated areas of my county it falls down to township rules.
“No more SF than the house” is pretty common.

You can ask for a variance, but a lot of that success depends on who you go to breakfast with.
The objectors have to prove a “hardship.”
That means money wise.
In other words, they have to prove your building would drop their property values.
That is pretty hard to prove since market property values are so subjective.
(Beauty is in the eye of the beholder for market value, while assessed property values just follow a set formula.)
If your variance will end up in more tax revenue into the local coffers you have a good chance of getting it.

But in Illinois, at least, town rules trump county rules.
In other words, your can do thing inside town limits that you can’t do in unincorporated areas if it is OK with the town.

Aint local politics fun?

Thanks every one for the comments. We did not have to get a variance to build we have enough land to have the correct set backs and coverage ratio. I am also not in there sub division my land backs up to the sub. I should have some new building pictures next weekend.

Thanks

I showed this to the wife last night. The Santa Claus holding a sign got us each a laugh- some people are really crazy.

Looks like a nice place is shaping up there. The offended individual will have to get over it or move- 'specially since you pointed out that you're not in the subdivision. Some people just don't know how good they have it. At least you're building a garage (and a nice one at that) and improving the property instead of installing the aforementioned hog farm or chicken processing plant. Be on your P's and Q's, keep records of everything, and stay on the good side of the law.

Applicable truisms:
Never wrestle with a pig. You'll just get dirty, and after a while you figure out that the pig likes it.
Never argue with an idiot. They'll just drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I would agree with your neighbor if you were in the subdivision, but since it sounds like you bought the old farmhouse or whatever...they normally have huge barns and stuff long after the property has been sold off.

I'm looking forward to seeing how nice you make the exterior...the nicer it is, the more ridiculous your neighbor's objections.

I had code enforcement visit me 3 time in less than 6mos after I moved to this house, complaints were- commerical equipment on residential lot, dismantling vehicles, operating repair business , I invited code officer to inspect, 2 officers showed up, both checked everything , found nothing wrong. had 3 cars (all running) in back yard.
2nd time was for non compliant garage, again code officer came and inspected, found my car port on wheels was ok.
3rd time was for excess vehicles behind my fenced/gated yard.(again 3 running cars)
this time I called atty friend and filed complaint with county, filed a harassment suit against the county and complaintant.
county quickly admitted no wrong doing, went before Judge and won judgement against neighbor lady, she never paid, so I placed a lien on her home, now house is for sale and her realtor had the balls to ask if I would forgive the lien. I reminder her that interest was also acruing, and NO I would not drop the lien.
there is justice !!!

Next time you have a lot of guys working on your garage why not pop over to this neighbour and suggest that as she's got a whole lot of time on her hands why not make herself useful and rustle up some lunch for the boys!

I think she must have eaten some dodgy beef a few years ago and caught Mad Cow Disease!

How much does she owe you?
I am speculating here:
She probably doesn't have enough to pay the fine(judgement)
Decides to sell the house:
A. to afford the fine....?
B. to avoid the hassle.
C. to stop looking at what she considers an eye-sore

This is probably the best news you have heard yet.

But She can't sell the house with a lein on it.

I think you're replying to parts of two different stories.

Riverside county, small comunity east of riverside, 10 mi either way from nearest town.
here is pic of front of house, eyesore?

Not in my book. Looks nice and tidy and your cars all run and drive! I could see if they were decrepit broken down lawn furniture on blocks. As long as you are considerate of noise, then what could she be complaining about?

Many counties, towns, villages, etc. have zoning ordinances for signs as well. It would be funny if she were in violation for hers.
