Call me crazy, but I think I'm going to add a set of 6 pt Metric Combo wrenches to my stash.

Looked at all the offerings - sk, cf, gw, proto, armstrong and SO. Don't think there's anyone else. Out of all of them, I think I might just spend the big bucks and get the SO

It won't get used much but there have been instances where I was like, hot damm, if only I had a 6pt wrench on this fitting

mobile, don't know if you are crazy or not, don't know that well yet:willy_nil

but a 6 point combo set may very well come in handy. Most guys I sell them to already have extensive tool collections and are serious mechanics. Certainly not an early purchase in most collections, but desirable none the less.

Got me a set of Craftsman 6pt , a year ago. Made in USA, got them on sale. Haven't use them yet.

I also got a set years ago. These were actually my first metric set of wrenches. I figured since id be working on rusty stuff its better to go 6 pt. I love them, never had any problem gripping a nut or bolt head and would highly reccomend a set. I'm Actually vry surprised to hear these arent common. I guess most people have the enhanced wrenches that grip better. But likke i said these are my first and go to metric wrenches

I like the idea of the 86198 SK wrench set, but sure wouldn't pay anything near retail.

I got a simple few in small sizes. I never look for a 6 above 5/8 or 15mm. All those larger sizes don't make so much difference and can use a flea mkt wrench.
I have a set of snaps I bought early on, the small ones to 9/16 have earned their keep and I finally stripped them all out of general circulation and tossed in with specialty like tubing wrenches etc. Out of 500 wrenches or so have a dozen real good but I would second the Cman here,,, nice to have a set, not needed on every bolt a guy turns.

I have a set of Metric Snap-on 6pt wrenches. 7-15 & 17. It was a 10-15 & 17 set and I ended up buying 7, 8 & 9 due to needing a 6pt 8mm one day. I'll probably go ahead and get a 16, 18 & 19 due to my OCD about incomplete sets. I've used them several times working on rusty air cooled VW's. There have been times where that is all that would get out a rounded fastener I had to deal with.

Got my 10-15 & 17 set used on eBay and bought the 7, 8 & 9mm off the truck as I needed that 8mm right then.

People that live in the rust belt, I don't see how 6pt wrenches aren't a must?

I got standard and metric. A) I live in the rust belt. B) I work on control valves. But I also have 12 point. Snap on is my choice.

i have a piece mealed sae Proto set in their anti-slip pebble finish, mostly bought them for work when i used to work with pneumatics alot more and didnt want to marr up the fittings incase customers saw them. i dont use them too much in my day to day, but when theres original bolts from the 30's that are rusted out and a little soft, i use them if a 12pt wont bite and is slipping and deforming the head

I recently put together a metric set from Cripe Distributing on eBay.They currently have 10-16mm made by Armstrong and 8,9 and 17-19mm made by KD Tools. All of them are USA made and fully polished.I got them all for around $50 shipped. They may never get used, but hey,I had to buy something to fill the 1 empty spot in my roller cabinet.

OP, check out the Searsoutlet.com. They have USA made metric and SAE 8 pc sets for 14.99. Lots in stock too.

That should be rewarded. If I was starting over would be exactly what I would do and if it didn't work out or needed further attn. a guy could spend some more but I would near put money on it being sufficient and not a lot extra you really don't need taking up space.

I've got SAE and metric Craftsman 6 point. They aren't used every day but when I need them, there is no replacement! Normally if I can get a 6 point socket in a spot that is what I use verses wrenches, but if I need to hold a rusty bolt or nut while spinning a ratchet or impact I like a 6 pt. wrench.

I have never felt the need, but I don't live in the rust belt.

I picked up the Craftsman Metric and SAE sets at the Outlet Store for pretty cheap. They are still in the package, Made in USA and tucked away in case I need them.....worse case I'll be handing them down to my 4 year old son someday!

Sears Outlet has the 9pc sets for $14.99 each for SAE and metric. If you go online, they have a tools bundle set with both the SAE and metric sets for $19.98. I couldn't pass this up and picked this bundle set up a couple weeks ago and both sets are USA made. The outlet store I went to couldn't do the bundle price in-store so I ordered online while there and set it up for store pick up. The folks working there were pretty surprised. They didn't know anything about the bundles. here's a link.

I bought a set of CM SAE a while ago. Finally used one of them this week, changing the oil on my F150. If anything, the fit was too tight, as it was a little difficult getting it to fit on the (admittedly slightly misshapen) drain plug.

I have the gearwrench set that comes in the roll pouch. I have only used it 3-4 times but I wouldnt want to go without a 6pt metric set in my tool box. I generally grab my 12pt USA made Craftsman RP, or a 6 pt socket before the gw 6 pts..call me crazy too I guess.

I bought the Craftsman (made in USA) SAE and metric sets about a year ago. I've used them a few times. They're fine. No problems, no complaints.

I don't think it's crazy at all !! I've often encountered old rusty bolts or nuts that needed a 6 point wrench. This is particularly true of sizes 3/4" and below where a 12 point can often slip on a smaller worn or rusty head/nut.

I did the same thing ibzepfan did .... built a set of individual 6 point metric Armstrongs from Cripe Distributing. Very nice wrenches! I usually try to get Wright tools, but I don't think Wright makes 6 point combos. Or, if they do, I overlooked them in the Wright catalog.

Yeah I'm jealous of you guys that don't know what real rust is!! Where I use 6 pt wrenches the most is bumper bolts on old junk. Omg sometimes it is like they are welded on!!

I have the entire set (sae/mm) of Craftsman RP combo wrenches for just that reason. Sometimes I think bolts are welded on too! Additionally I drive cars forever (211k on the Acura), so the rust really get a good grip on things.

My 6 points are craftsman raised panel usa. There's absolutely nothing wrong with them. If you're spending snap on money on wrenches they'll end up being your most used by committee. To buy an expensive set for occassional use doesn't make a whole lot of sense but it's your money.

I also use the CM RP USA 6 pts, mainly on my motorcycle: lots of small fasteners made of oatmeal, corrosion, can't get at them with a socket.

I like them and I think $15 is great.

I have the USA made Craftsman 6 point wrenches. Nice for rusty or damaged fasteners. They fit well! Also nice for backing up an impact wrench. I recommend them.
