I need to buy a tap to tap the ends of my tierods. (I'm upgrading to 1 ton steering on my jeep axle) The one ton tie rod ends use 7/8x18 thread I believe. Does anyone know where I can find an inexpensive (notice I didn't say "cheap") one? I also am unfamiliar with fluted? taps or taps in general I guess. If someone has expierence with one and would recommend it that would be awesome. Thanks in advance.

If you need to do "thread repair" on the ends, then you are going to need a die, not a tap. The tap would be used on the tie rod end coupling. How about a picture of what you are attempting ????

The usual trick is to find a longer tie rod that matches the ends you want to use, and cut it to length. Then you'll only need to buy one tap. If you make a new tie rod out of tubing, you'll need a LH and a RH tap to tap both ends. IIRC MSC is a good source for a tap.

you may want to try a local machine supply place. many machine tool places have lots of used stuff they buy at auction. you can often buy what you need for 1/4 to 1/2 of new

the closest thing I have is a 7/8-14

The flutes are the sections of the tap that aren't threaded; this is where the cut chips will accumulate; sort of like a blood groove on a knife blade. Always remember to back out a half turn every so often as you're advancing your tap to clear off the chips; if you skip this step, you run the risk of breaking your tap. Use cutting oil as you're tapping too; this will prolong the life of your tap.

mscdirect.com is a good source for taps.

I don't have any pics right now, but I am going from a full length tie rod, and a drag link from pitman arm to steering arm above the knuckle, to a set-up where the draglink will connect to the tierod near the knuckle. I have the right diameter tube on there now, I just need to shorten both of them. When I do, I will need to put threads back in the ends I cut off. Going with the different set-up I will have to buy different tie rod ends for those anyhow. Thanks for the info. this far, and keep the options coming.

There are countless place on the net to buy cutters and taps. I purchase through MSC because they sell Titex and Balax which are both high end cutting tools and I don't often buy the cheaper stuff since I am it it for the long haul.

Here is one that sells "less expensive" taps - http://www.wttool.com/
