This is my first try at making something like this.

I want to make the hood scoop functional and plan on making a plenum that mounts to the bottom of the hood that will match up to the other half which will be around the air cleaner.

The stock trim is zink die-cast and would never hold the weight of the plenum, plus it's cracked. The stock scoop was just for show. It’s 14 gauge sheet metal.

While I applaud your initiative, that's a horrible area to try to pull air into the engine from....

Thanks, you just helped me make up my mind. I'll put the grille in it and call it good, the engine will be visible through the grille but it will look good.

I wouldn't say it's a horrible place, just need to take into account the water from driving in the rain, washing, etc. Dad make the shaker scoop on his 78 Trans Am functional.

Sweet ride mate. 429?

351C 4V, top loader trans, took the engine to the machinest yesterday.

I fixed some cracks in the pot metal front grille with Super Alloy 1 yesterday, worked pretty good. Here's some before and after photos.

I had made a bracket to hold it so I had to also fill in the screw holes I drilled for the bracket.

If I remember correctly the Cyclone Spoiler was available with a “ram air” 429 engine as an option. I am sure it would not be easy to locate but why don’t you try to find all the factory parts from a ram air and modify them to fit the 351C?
It also might be possible that some of the Mustang ram air parts could be used, I know they rebop most of them. If nothing else you could make a removable magnetic cover for your scoop grill that would install on the underside of the hood to block some of the direct rain from entering the engine compartment.
I’m a Mercury guy from way back, my ‘64 Cyclone has been with me for over 50 years.
