70# Vanadium Steel Anvil Picked Sunday

[PinchPoint]

These were sold by Monkey Wards & Sears in the late 30s and early 40s. An add in the 30s shows this anvil selling for 12.59 I think. This one has a great rebound and rings nice all over best at the horn.

That's really clean. I want a smaller one now. I have the Trenton 250lb I just picked up, but a 40-50lb walk-about would be great for around the property.

that is one sweet looking anvil and I really like the stand. you barely got done packing up a great looking swivel headed vise and now you are selling this anvil.

i'm guessing this one is for local pick up or shipping on a pallet? i'm not sure how to weigh this brand, but if the face is about 12 inches plus the horn is it about 70 to 100 pounds?

is the 70 a model # or the weight marked on this brand or does that little #3 mean anything down there by the base?

Nice looking anvil. I know little about them but did know about ring, didn't know about rebound but that makes sense for repeatedly striking something.

If shipped you will get the anvil. If the stand is also wanted I can ship it separate if you like. It has a bid already @ 300 to start. The rebound is needed to get your work completed faster. You hit from the top and the item also gets a good smack from the under side. The better the bounce the better the anvil! This is how I understand it. If it thunks it not worth buying. Unless the rebound is awesome. I would suppose this could happen. It's all about the rebound...If you drop a steel ball bearing. It should return close to where you dropped it from above the anvil. It's suppose to weigh 70#.

Put it on your bathroom scale & you'll be certain of the weight. I'm guessing it's closer to 100 lbs., but I could be wrong. Nice anvil.

It's attached and will stay that way until sold and only if shipped. The 70 is 70# 100 120 and 150 were the other weights they made with that # casted into the anvil. I think the numbers are correct.

I got lucky last week vise, the heavy bench it came with and this anvil on sun. I also purchased a cast hand operated hand pump, 5' tall welding tank a sweet one and a 120v siren from a Toledo high school on sun. all has bid or sold but the pump. Yes a good week indeed...

The rebound/bounce is desired for arm fatigue. When swinging a heavy hammer all day, you want the anvil to do the work for you by bringing the hammer back up. Otherwise, you are lifting that hammer up 100s of times and it wears on you. Same reason you would never use a dead blow for blacksmithing / forging. (maybe on delicate stuff, but you get the point)

Resilience is more important than hardness (they are related though) as hardness is a resistance to deformation, resilience is a a measure of the ability for a material to return energy elastically.

This is why a ball bearing drop test is more valuable for our purposes than straight hardness.

I think the means it will decrease the work needed to perform the task. When you drop a hammer on an anvil it will rebound easily. With metal in between no as much rebound, depending on what you are hitting. This must mean he item being struck is absorbing the rebound off the anvil. I would assume...

Thanks for the education!! The rebound info makes perfect sense and I like the ball bearing drop test. I sell a lot of used tools but have never gotten into anvils. Don't see a lot at the sales I go to but now I have some info if I run into them!

Just fyi, another good, cheap packing solution for heavy stuff is ridgid foam from Home Depot. 4' x 8' sheet. It's like $8.35 for 1/2" and $12 or so for 3/4". Use a T-Square and cut it like drywall.

So, I assume the anvil sold?
