Re: 70 Yr old couple building a barn (garage/workshop)

Just finished reading all 7 pages and have to take my hat off to Dave and Lin for their energy, problem solving abilites, craftsmanship, team work, and not leting age slow you down. Glad to hear eye appointment went well. The barn build is awesome and very informative. I enjoy the character of old barns or new barns with a the old time look to them. I would love to work with you on this just to gleen some of the wonderful knowledge and ingenuity you are displaying. Definatly some old school technology going into this build, and you will have many many years of use and enjoyment from your hard work.

I work for a farmer on my days off from my regular job, he is 76 and has worked his whole life farming, buying, fixing and reselling farm equipment, and there are days he is crawling around on some of this equipment better then me(and he is 31 years my senior, guess I had better lose some of this weight, that would help) It just goes to show you are only as old as you think you are. So when i am 70 or 76 or 106 I hope to be thinking that i am still 30 something.

Again kudos Dave and Lin to your accomplishments on this build and everything you 2 kids have accomplished throuhout your life journey together.

Looking forward to new progress, and for the weather to cooperate with you on that.

Looks Great-doing A good Job...I see you used wire mesh in your concrete floor, I read once that 90 percent of wire mesh ends up in the bottom 1'' or on the ground below the concrete . I have watched people pour there concrete with wire, unless they pull it up while pouring I agree with that.Even if they pull it up,it is not in there level. Keep up the good work,be nice when done.........

Re: 70 Yr old couple building a barn (garage/workshop)

I like to hear from Lin and Dave been awhile..How are you guys doing ?

Thanks for asking and again for all the kind words.

It has been a long hard winter for us here in Arkansas, as we well know it has for folks all around the country. We had hope to make some progress, at least four or five days a month. That didn’t happen. We had some things happen to the house because of the ice and snow and extreme cold for this area. So the few good, or workable, days that we got in Feb. we had to do repairs to the house.

We purchased a new Werner ladder in Dec. and also got a set and a half of levelers to add to it. We installed those a couple of weeks ago and that is going to help me a lot on the outer sides of the building. Pictures of that will be included when we update the web site.

The other major happening here in the last two week, although not entirely on topic, has been the complete redo my desktop and the ISP that is feeding it. We had a satellite system as a provider. (I don’t like to use names when you have nothing good to say about someone.) They were going off more than they were on and trying to tell us it was on our end and wanted to sent out a tech at a minimum cost of $125.00 NOT. It was pretty much the only option we had when we moved here three years ago. But about a year ago AT&T ran some new DSL down thru town and I called to see if I could get on it. Alas still too far out. But they said they have this other outfit called AT&T UVerse and they would transfer me over to them. They claimed they could get me hooked up. Long story short about how it all went but they did it and have been nothing but the best to deal with.

We also are running on a 2002 eMachine (Walmrt cheap) and therefore, are a little outdated. Ordered a 1 gig Ram stick from Crucial in Iowa and got a new Dell 18.5 inch monitor, again from Walmart. Needed to download new drivers from Nvidia so that I could set the resolution high enough to make the monitor work. Put the new ram in yesterday and WOW.

The download speed from UVerse is over 5 times what the dish was, now getting 5,100 to 5,200 mbs every time I check it. The new Ram has cured all the slowness on the programs and the monitor is absolutely super. No more scrolling sideways. Also downloaded and upgraded to IE8. Really like it. So much so that I put it on Lin’s two year old Dell laptop.

We are really pleased with the way this has all turned out computer wise, because once we get back to the barn we just don’t have time to screw with it. And to be able to keep up with the web site and this forum as well as other internet sites that we need to with the way it was becoming, was damn near impossible.

Got some of the gas powered things fired up yesterday afternoon, just because it got nice enough to do it. The forecast for today and Sunday is for rain and turning real cold and ending with measurable snow. So plans to get started on anything that requires more than a couple hours are still on hold .

Spring just happened a few minutes ago and with most of this other stuff resolved we hope to be back at it next week. Need to, have gained 15 lbs and assorted aches and pains just sitting around.

We certainly appreciate all the concern and kind words and was surprised (kinda) that we were dug out of the back pages.

Yeah, looking forward to school opening. I went through the same thing with the dish thing about 6 years ago. Rural KS and no DSL 'till then. Went to DSL and with a few hiccups got things fixed. Yeah, love that ram. Well, we were welcomed into the first day of spring with 3" of snow and 30 mph winds. This winter has been amotivational all the way around. But soon you will open class again.

Now why would you be surprised?:headscrat

A wonderful project being under taken by a couple not exactly in their first flush of youth, who are also internet savvy and whose workmanship is first class?

Been said before but truly an inspiration to many on this board.:bowdown:

Looking forward to seeing the progress as & when the weather picks up.

My wife and I are 68 and 65 and we have hired good friends for most of our construction projects...I have the inclination, vision and some skills and so does 5/8ths, but due to 4th stage arthritis, not the ability/mobility to do it ourselves without lots of pain. I greatly admire your ingenuity, especially with "Derrick"...looks like something out of the middle ages or Roman times to assault some ancient enemy, ha! lol. We are starting our 30' x 66' addition to our garage which will have a four post Bend Pak HD9 so I don't have to crawl around on the floor to position jacks and pads on two post lifts...can't do that anymore. My hats off to you and your 5/8ths (better half).

Re: 70 Yr old couple building a barn (garage/workshop)

Trailers , Squirrels , and Rain.

Needed to get a trailer to continue the work. The one that a neighbor had let us use is no longer available. The new trailers that they sell in this area for under $800 are all the same, built for ATV’s and lawn mowers and just thrown together with angle iron at best. Flat beds go into four wheels and the price climbs real fast.
Got to admit we wasted too much time and gas money riding around looking at junk. Some of that time was on some decent weather days too.
Then because we are near this big lake I started looking at boat trailers. Found one down in Mayflower , (50 miles) at of all places a Paint Ball Competition game area. The boat was damaged and they were selling the trailer on Craigs list. Real good solid frame of 2 x 4 tube. The plan is to build a flat bed that a fork lift will be able to load on and than when we get done with it we will have a trailer that we can sell as what it is or as a boat trailer. Should have no problem getting most of our money back. If not maybe I will buy a boat.

Squirrels, We have had a problem over this last fall and winter with Squirrels. They or one, they all look alike, are trying to get into the rafters of the main roof. The area where the kitchen roof goes under the main roof is inch and a half to two inches below the face board of the main rafters and just enough for the Squirrels to crawl in and out. At each end the opening would be no problem to close off , but the previously mentioned area because of the ribs of the tin roof would be.
We tried over the winter various attempts to either capture or deter the little varmints and at one point we thought we had won. But then when the rains came again they were back at their favorite, I guess, place. Actually eating thru the face board all along that section. Bite the bullet , take the time now before the tin on the roof gets to hot to be up on it , and fix it. Had four pieces of roof cap that was sent to us with the wrong bend for the barn so I cut it by hand to fit into the area and within a quarter to three eights of an inch of the kitchen roof surface and got it screwed to the face board in five foot lengths each. Time consuming and not a fun project.
So far so good.

Rain , we did have some decent weather in April but we also have had some rain and strong storms. Which are expected in this part of the country in the spring.
The storm that came thru here and produced the massive Tornado that went into MS , dumped four and a quarter inches of rain on us. Lost five days on that one , and looking at another five days today thru Tuesday. Forecast is for strong to severe with two to three inches of rain again.

So that has been our April and what more or less has been going on since we last posted.
Next time we load to the web site I will post a sampling of pictures of the Squirrel proof and the strange trailer. Another Eye doc appointment on Wed. and hopefully back to the barn. The rain also keeps us behind the lawnmower way too often also. Part of doing this stuff yourself is there is always other stuff that need doing also.

Thanks for checking in on us.

I've got a utility trailer made from a heavy-duty boat trailer my uncle had and it works very well. It had a heavy duty axle (3500lbs or better iirc) came with electric brakes, and the frame is very stout. My father welded some angle braces on it and we bolted down the decking. (never going to convert it back to hauling boats)

The shorter length and single axle make it a lot easier to maneuver around my tight property than my Brother-in-law's double axle trailer and it hauls anything I ask it to. I've even hauled a light car on it (stripped-out Hyundai Accent junk racer) but I wouldn't put anything heavier than that on it.

When budgets are tight, this is a really good, often-overlooked option.
With your ingenuity I'm sure it would be no problem for you.

I love your barn project and look forward to seeing more progress on it!

Re: 70 Yr old couple building a barn (garage/workshop)

I had Squirrels in my attic and they chewed on everything, had read somewhere that they hate bright lights, especially blinking type (strobe), so I put a white strobe light up there on a timer couple of houre in the morning and about 4 hrs after dark. No more Squirrels after a couple of weeks. Only have 1 window on one end and had to cover it because it was bothering my neighbor but have since removed it, if they come back I will cover it back up and turn the light back on.

Re: 70 Yr old couple building a barn (garage/workshop)

We had a few of you that wanted us to post some pics of the trailer that we reworked and
also I would like to show the ladder that we added this winter. The ladder pics may be
of interest to some that are not familiar with a multi ladder concept.
Both of these will be a major help as we continue with the barn.
As always there are more pics and detail on these on the web site at this link.

http://www.ninetyninesigns.com/barnproject/ladder/ladder0515101.html

ladder051510_03.gif

Above; Adding a set of LeveLoks to our new 22 foot Werner Multi ladder. Just drill three
three eights holes in the rail.
All bolts and spacers to attach these to almost any ladder come with the units.
ladder051510_04.gif

Above; Base units bolted directly to both outside rails.
ladder051510_06.gif

Above; Showing how levelers clip into the base unit. Note there is also a pin for safety.
ladder051510_07.gif

Above; Leveler has both rubber pad and ice pick.
ladder051510_10.gif

Above; Both installed. LeveLok normally reccomends that these be installed on the same end
of the ladder. However because this is a multi adjustable step ladder we installed them
on the same side.
Next pics will show my theory.
ladder051510_12.gif

Above; The ladder on two different levels and surfaces. The base width on the tall version
of these ladders is real wide and make for a very stable ladder at all extended heights.
This will also make into two staging bases.
Best step ladder I have ever used.
Only downside so far is that for me it is a little heavy.
On to the boat trailer.
trailer051510_01.gif

Above; The boat trailer as we got it.
trailer051510_06.gif

Above; Had been hit in the side and fender bottoms were both rolled under. I straightened
the stuff out and there was one brace that had broke. Took it to Steve’s fix it shop. No place
yet to plug in my welder. 10 Bucks and he did both sides top and bottom. Factory had not
done this.
trailer051510_08.gif

Above; Got four 4 X 4 pressure treated cut and make eight cross members.
trailer051510_13.gif

Above; Installing spacers made from 37 inch leg pieces cut off of “Derrick”.
trailer051510_14.gif

trailer051510_28.gif

Above; Router cut for ramp end.
trailer051510_31.gif

Above; Highland ramp end. Nice fit. They didn’t send the bolt pkg. tho so used half inch
instead of the seven sixteens that they would have.
trailer051510_34.gif

Above; Works for Lin. She calls the trailer her "Buckboard".
trailer051610_01.gif

Above; This is how we will start using it. Hook it up and take it to town.
trailer051610_02.gif

Above; May be a little tongue heavy but will watch how I load it.

To see all the trailer pics go to http://www.ninetyninesigns.com/barnproject/ladder/ladder05151020.html

I like what I see here and plan on building something like this for my motorcycles and a mancave setup. Like a bar, pool table, and other good stuff. I hope to start it in the next few months since I'm about to retire.

Any more updates?
The quick answer to that is , no.
None on the barn build. Still getting some health issues out of the way and other chores that needed doing. Should start again next week on the roof.
Thanks for asking, have a safe and happy Memorial Day week end.

Re: 70 Yr old couple building a barn (garage/workshop)

Latest update (without pictures).
We have started back at it. Working on what we call the north side roof. Have finished the facia trim and set up for the lower roof venting. Got last two purlings and spacers done. Squared off and marked for installing the foil bubble foil and the metal roof.
Weather here has been extremly hot. Indices up to 105- 110. Spend eight hours out there, get three hours of work and five hours wiping sweat.
Ordered the metal for that side yesterday. Will be here in about a week.
Will post pics when we get into that segment.

preparation to putting roof on the north wing. Not very exciting but all necessary for

I had wondered why you used the 4x4s on for the floor. This makes more sense than that you were planning on transporting elephants. I had not read the descriptions of the picture close enough to catch that you side rails were also loading ramps.

Great attention to detail! I love it.

What was the reason behind washing the timber down?

Re: 70 Yr old couple building a barn (garage/workshop)

What was the reason behind washing the timber down?

Thanks for the concern.
Most of you know that this is taking forever to do, and as a consequence some of the rafters and beams have been exposed for awhile. In the humidity that we get in Arkansas the wood has picked up some staining etc. from not being able to try out. Most all of that side that we are working on now had been washed and scrubed with a professional grade hydrogen peroxide product late last fall. It however never got rinsed as well as it should have cause we didn't have a power washer then. We had flushed it just with a garden hose, but our pressure from our water dept. is low and it didn't get it all. So that is the reason for just the water and no chemicals. I have to be careful what I can use, especially overhead, cause with only one eye, I can't take too much of a risk.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought it might have been sticky residue from tree sap or bugs.

Good to see Derrick Jr in the photos too:thumbup:
