I have a Dayton 7500 Watt heater I am looking to wire. I have a short piece of wire with a molded 14-50 plug. Can I use this and wire in an outlet? I know that I would only need two of the power wires and the ground. The other option is to run individual wires in flexible conduit (metal). I am just looking to see my options, I want to do it right, but if I have something I can use and 14-50 outlets are reasonable then I would have the option of unplugging the unit and using the outlet for something else (I am not sure what)

THANKS

You need to wire according to the specs of the heater. Even though the cord you have has a 14-50 plug on it doesn't mean the wire is large enough. What did the cord come off of and what is the wire size?

I picked it up in one of the auctions box-o-stuff, so I do not know what it came off of. I am trying to figure out the wire gauge. I do not have the ability to just look and know the gauge.

Is there a way to use a drill bit gauge to measure wire?

I have some black romex to run from the box, but not sure if it is 6 or 8 gauge. I just stripped some wire off the cord (connected to the plug I have) and it was over .200 (It is stranded).

The jacket of the cord should be labeled with the wire gauge.

I will be wiring 7500 watt heater in my basement. The # 8 wire I will be using,do I need a neutral wire? Also I will be installing an external 2 pole thermostat to operate the heater. What size wire do I use for that?
