I accidentally read the post about 8-36 bolts. As it turns out, I bought a handle in IKEA for my door. The bolt that they provided was 8-36 (fine thread)13/8 bolt. But my door is 13/8 thick and requires a 3" bolt. I spent hours searching it on the web, but no luck. Anybody can give me a lead, where to find a #8-36x3" bolt?
Thanks Gene

Can you find all-thread that size and make your own? Could you counter-sink the head of the bolt and make the one that came with it work?

If all else fails you could get a machine shop to make you one

Are you sure it isn't an 8 X 32 or even metric coming from IKEA I would suspect metric. If you haven't tried it yet find a nut that screws on it to verify the thread pitch. Let us know how it works out.

I'd bet money it's metric. But if you ever do need a 8/32 x 3" just go buy a toggle bolt and toss the toggle.

Yep, it's metric. Ikea's Schveedish, ya know.

Without sensitive instruments, M4X0.7 thread is indistinguishable from #8-36, and they would very likely thread into one another.

0.7mm thread pitch = 36.286 tpi
5/32" = 3.97mm

One of my pet hatreds is how metrically retarded we are in the US of damn A. But that's another rant for another day, I guess.

They will with effort. I've done it more than enough times it's a 50/50 chance of not stripping one or the other. I've attempted it enough times to just go ahead and tap the nut and because it's so close not lose enough metal to affect the thread engagement. So my suggestion to make it simple would be hit up the local Ace, grab a toggle and tap then thread the insert nut

Btw, just to clarify I'm talking about a 8-32 machine crew.

I would look at:
cutting the screw and welding an extension to make it longer.
or
cut the thread portion off & weld it to another #8 screw to make it lenght you need
or
drill the female thread and tap to 10-32 and replace screws
or
buy a 8-32 helicoil and install that and replace screws

In this case I agree with those above who say it's metric. It's VERY doubtful that IKEA would use a 8-36 machine screw, but given that they are European, it's very likely they would use metric.
