8 car garage size?

I'm building an 8 car garage for my new house and I was wondering what the dimensions should be like? I'd want each car space to fit at the largest an extended SUV, have enough space between garage spaces that you can easily open car doors and pass in between cars easily, while still having enough space on the wall opposite the garage doors to have storage for a bike and other small things as well as enough room for walking from one side of the garage to the other comparatably. So what do you think the dimensons should be?

I'd say at a minimum allow 12' x 24' for each vehicle, but you may want to go longer (particularly if you have extended cab pickups or things like that) and wider if you have the space and budget.

for 8 car I would think about going 2 deep, do something like 50 - 55' wide (door wall) and 40 - 45' deep. This gives you options for longer vehicles or to pull in with an attached trailer. It does make getting the cars in the back out a little more difficult...

I would go NO LESS than 28' and preferably make it 30' deep. As far as width I wouldn't go any less than 14' per vehicle, but with that, you're looking at 112' wide. So like Bojans stated above, you may be better off going 2 deep on the vehicles so around 56' deep and 56' wide.

You may also want to consider going up. From the money you would save on structure cost, you could purchase 4 lifts and park over and under. In doing so, you could go 30' deep and 60' wide.

Take your biggest vehicle and measure it LxW. Add 3 feet to either side. Multiply that by 8 and there you have it.

Make paper cutouts to scale and arrange them to what you like.

For an easy "get the feel" for sizing:
An InterState lane is 12 feet wide.
Most parking lots have 10 foot wide parking spots.

A lot of people look at scenery on a driver, I look at buildings, built and designed a few, seen most ways you can do it wrong and a lot of it is simple. What seemed like a good idea to a Bud to build 30X40 would have paid great returns to go 36 wide with 2 doors in gable end. 2 cars wide really crowed the walls, lost a huge amount of cheap storage. Length wasn't terrible with some tools up front but it was cramped to do real work in when I come from a bit more space.

In my own shop the main reason I would have considered another 20 ft long would have been for added space along walls for a couple more machine tools, tire balancer. I am at 80x80 and it works for me but I might rethink it if not in business, a lot of walking here but makes up for it in other convenience. I have plenty of turning room, wall space is the premium property and I really could gain a bit with a minor remodel.

Here is a suggestion, build it six bays wide and use four post lifts in three of the bays. If you go with twelve foot bays then you start with 72 feet. If you what work space then you add to that, I would go with another twelve for a total of 84 feet.
For depth you need at least 24 foot for a full size four door pickup so if you plan on putting any shelves or work benches in front of the vehicle you will need to add feet. I wold go at least 34 feet so you won't feel crowded.
So 84 x 34 with 14 foot ceiling for the lifts.

One side of my garage is 24' and when I pull in my Dodge Ram 4 door shortbox on that side, there is just enough room to walk around the front of it. I measured it before and with the rear bumper just inside the garage door, IIRC it was something like 38" from front bumper to the wall. That's why I said no less than a minimum of 28' which is how deep the other side is. When my truck is on that side, I have room to work under the hood, plus I still have my roller toolbox and air compressor up front. Four feet extra make a huge difference.

I agree! I have a 24x24 shop. And when I pull my ex cab z71 in I only have three feet or so to work in front of it. That's with the back bumper a inch or two inside if garage door.

I'd be thinking something like 30' deep and 112' wide.

You need the extra depth, not only for long vehicles but also to be able to cheat vehicles away from each other when you pull in, unless you intend to have 8 separate garage doors.

I hate parking vehicles two deep in a garage, because one of the worst things you can do to a vehicle is start it and run it for a short time when it has not been recently run. All the oil has run off the bearings and the short run just builds condensation in the exhaust and engine.

60x60 can work well if you have topography and room for driveways on opposing sides. What is really nice about this layout is you can pull through park, so it works well if you have trailers and when you open the doors on both sides you get great ventilation.

There is a house a couple of miles from me that has an attached front load 4 car garage (2- 16 or 18 ft doors) that faces the main street and an attached side load 4 car garage (2-16 or 18 ft doors) that faces a side street. Seems like the two are connected but doors aren't open when I drive by so I can't tell for sure. Based on what I can see with door placement, the front section is 26-28 ft deep.

Even though your current plans are for an extended SUV, plan for something bigger since it doesn't seem like Detroit is going to start shrinking the size of vehicles in a particular class anytime soon. I wouldn't do anything less than 28 or 30 ft deep allowing space for toolboxes and storage. I'm thinking 12 ft wide stalls like mentioned before would be comfortable - maybe a little wider if you're planning any lifts for work or storage.

This surely was WILD GOOSE CHASE as first post and crazy at that.

If OP already had 8 cars, what the hell was storing them now?? Why couldn't he take measurements of THAT building ??

Let's see pics of the 8 cars then GJer's can help design. I'm calling BS.

Pics of 8 cars, or this talk of giant shop is vaporware !! :D . . .

Best answer here unless its working garage. for a working garage 12x30 per vehicle would be great. what are you trying to do with the space?

this is an old post, but I'll answer it anyway, for someone thinking about size. My garage is 40 X 60 with 2 4 post bend pack lifts, a 9K and a 14K which is extra long. there is a 30" work bench along the back wall that is 30' long. The garage has 10'4" walls and sissor trusses in the back section with 5/12 pitch outside and 3/12 inside. 16' X 9' door in gabled end

Here is what is in there tonight, right rear corner 9K lift 65 mustang on top, 84 RX7 hotrod on bottom, middle rear 14K with 2002 Explorer on it, left rear of garage is dedicated work area for projects presently has a 1982 CJ7 I've just restored.

next row right side 2012 mustang GT, middle 2004 Ranger, left side 2005 miata

Next row on right atv next to wall, middle 2012 Escape, on left 67 Mustang

9 vehicles with plenty of room to open doors etc. if the middle lift is raised room for another under the Explorer, and still room for one next to the ATV
