I didn't want to hijack Bill's thread on the lights he intends to buy, but it got me to wondering. In my last shop I went with my electrician and we bought fixtures from an electrical supply house.....don't remember what I paid each but with daylight bulbs they kicked ****...........except after several years when it got pretty cold they had issues.
Now that I'm building my new shop here in michigan, I've considered the high output fixtures offered at Lowes......any experience with those? They are roughly 58.00 per unit.........thanks Keith

Keith,

The fixtures I am getting are high output T8 with elecrtonic ballast. This is the good stuff. Let me know if you are interested in splitting these. I think that I need 26 but the deal was for 50, so I should have 24 left over. The price is $10 plus shipping and includes a bulb. You will need to have 240 volts plus a buck boost transformer, about $50. It looks like you can use regular light switches.

Let me know if you are interested.

A note on the switch's, if you're switching on the secondary side of the trans (277volt), you'll need a heavy duty switch that's rated for 277v. If the switch is on the primary (240volt), I would suggest a heavy duty switch because the trans is an inductive load that can shorten the life of the switch.

I have 9 8' Hi-output fluorescents in my garage(28x28x11). After seeing the lights on one night, one of my neighbors ask me if an alien spacecraft stopped in for a tune-up. I believe I paid around $50 a pop @ HD up here in CT.

I like 'em so far.

I also bought the 8' fixtures from HD and found them to be noisy even though they had class A sound rated electronic ballasts. I know it's expensive, but I replaced that ballasts (at about $30 per ballast) with replacement (GE brand) ba;;asts from HD and they are dead quiet.

Thanks for the replies..........
I think I'm going to buy the high-output ones at Lowes.......at 58.00 apiece I'm hoping I don't find a need to replace the ballasts as the ballasts should be the reason they cost 58.00 apiece. I just thought that with their buying power, maybe they are a good quality fixture at a decent price versus shopping at an electrical supply house who may not be in a position to sell as cheap.
That is why I'm asking for any of your opinions on the ones at Lowes although I would think a similarly priced fixture at home depot would be similar...... Keith

DO NOT BUY YOUR FIXTURES FROM THE CHI-COM BOX STORES!!!!!!!!! They are ****, as some of you are experiencing. I got my MetaLux's from the local lighting distributor for the same price and they are GREAT!
