I'm looking to install lighting in my newly constructed 40x50 shop, and have been following several threads on opinions about the 4' linkable LED shop lights from Costco/Feit or Menards. I dont think I'm interested in T8 LED bulbs.

I can't help but wonder why nobody is discussing an 8 foot option. I searched around and it seems not many manufacturers make such a product. I'd rather put in half the number of fixtures than put in a bunch of 4' strips.

Are there any options out there i just cannot find? Or what am I missing, is there any advantage to the smaller lights?

I found these but they are incredibly expensive at over $300

Everything about 8' fixtures is a pain in the a**. I know UPS wont handle them, and I'm pretty sure that FedEx & USPS wont either. You can bet they'll show up damaged. Hanging them without 2 people is a challenge. And they dont provide any benefit, lighting-wise.
4' fixtures can be spread out over a space more easily, delivering more even light.
The manufacturers are spending all of their R&D money on 4' (or smaller) fixtures, so you'll find all the best performers and newer whistles & bells on those vs 8' fixtures.
Hope this helps.
Good luck,
CD

I have 8' fixtures with 48" lamps. Hauling eight footers home and getting rid of them can be a PITA.

There are retro kits to turn the 8 foot fixtures in a 4-48" bulb fixture. I know currently a major lamp manufacturer is trying to get a handle on 96" LEDs but are having problems.

I just took out 8' florescent for 4' LED. Way better in my opinion.

I have sixteen 8' led lights and 64 bulbs in my 36x40x12 garage each strip has its own switch. Haven't needed all lit up at once. 188e0e29b10a5245e27dd46586d3d594.jpg

Why against t8 led? If you have a section burn out only a tube replacement where many purpose made led are a whole fixture replacement. Will they sell a matching fixture in 5-10 years?

They are butted together. Take ends off and they hooked on to next one. I got them from a local electric supply house. I left it up to them to decide which was best for my application. They did a good job for me. $1,523 for all.

I bought 2 of the Menards 48 inch fixtures for a test and really liked the light they produced. I will be putting in 9 of them to start with in my 30x36. I wouldn't be to concerned about getting a matching fixture a few years down the road, unless you really want them to match. A 4 foot light will still be a 4 foot light.

and they are only 25 bucks right now, 22 if you take the rebate.

I like the 8' long fixtures that use 4 x 4' bulbs.

4' bulbs are soooooo much easier to handle and deal with. You can get 8' fixtures & bulbs at the big box stores but just trying to move them around and store extras and such is too much of a pain. Plus if you have smaller 4' fixtures you have a common bulb.

My garage originally had just 3 incandescent lights in it, now I have 5 florescent fixtures, and I kept two of the incandescent fixtures and just stuck some LED bulbs in them.
