Guys,

I have 8 of these (https://www.1000bulbs.com/product/152901/PHILIPS-381764.html) 110w 8800 Lumens bulbs in my shop. I am looking to replace them with equivalent lumen LED bulbs. I know I could remove the 8’ fixture and replace it with (2) standard 4 footers; but due to the mounting location that would be a huge pain.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: If it makes any difference the current light fixtures we purchased new in 2007.

There's several options, but first you should know that you dont need to match the lumens from the fluorescent lamp. That lamp depreciates quickly, and the fixture that it's in is likely only about 70% efficient (depending on the specific style). An LED solution in the ball park of 5000 lumens will be good.
In most options, you'll need to eliminate the existing ballast from the wiring, which is easy to do.
If you choose to use LED tubes, you'll likely be able to find them that use the same sockets. But since you've eliminated the ballast, you can use whatever socket/lamp combination that you want. LED T5 lamps are 3500 lumens per 4 foot. That's 7000 for each of your fixtures, which will actually appear brighter than what you have now.
Other options are to remove the entire ballast cover and sockets and put a new LED cover and lens on the fixture body. Again, very easy to do. Good looking, too, but the cost goes up.

There are tons of options for you.
Good luck,

Note that on the cheap low buck fixtures that are installed in our race trailer (4' two bulb T8 units) I had to buy new tombstones in order to wire in bypass LED bulbs. You need to jumper hot and neutral to one end of each bulb and the stock tombstones did not even include two contacts so they could be re-wired.

You have T12 HO fixtures, you can tell from the bayonet connector. Are you looking for drop in LED replacements for the existing fixture?

You need to replace the tombstones because, as what has already been said, you have HO lights. I had the same light eight foot fixtures you have (have ten of them). I bought bypass tombstones and steel brackets on e-bay for $10 a fixture, removed the ballasts and put in 4 foot LEDs. I also removed the copper out of the ballast to recoup some of my money.....

I choose to go with 4 foot lights because they are easier to find than 8' led's. I went with Hyperikon led lamps, 5000k in both clear and frosted (through amazon). Hyperikon also sells 96" led lights as well. I just preferred the 48" lamps.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO RELPACE THE TOMBSTONES. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO USE A 4' RETROFIT.

8' LED lamps exist, that use existing HO tombstones. The only requirement is rewiring the lamp holders and eliminating the ballast. Buying the 4' kit and 4 lamps vs 2 lamp is a wash... Actually two 8' lamps may be cheaper.

Just quick google search found this. https://www.greenledzone.com/4-300-lumens-t8-8ft-led-tube-light-36w-r17d-ho-base-5000k-ballast-bypass-only-etl-listed/?gclid=CjwKCAjwrO_MBRBxEiwAYJnDLBaiNaG2stBqz0cKWiBZTjOlVQ2ji2_-1qQp2jn6UVxmM9JIXki-yxoCJEwQAvD_BwE (Link)

You mentioned replacement of fixture would be a pain. Is it due to location? Rewiring a fixture in the air may be more of a pain than replacing fixture... Weigh your options.

Good luck!

Unless they used the same tombstones that are in the 6 fixtures like I have, or the 8' 4 bulb fixtures I used in the shop. Not all tombstones have the second push in terminal - the hole may be there, but the copper may not. So you DONT KNOW until you take your fixture apart. If you look at most any T8 electronic ballast, you'll see that only one wire on each end of the lamps is required. A lot of low cost fixtures use a SHUNTED tombstone and LED bypass bulbs need an NON SHUNTED item. The ones in the trailer are kind of snap in deal - found them on Amazon in packs of 10. What I had to order to do the conversion:

I personally would change any 8' fixture to use 4' bulbs as 8' bubs of any type a just a big pain in the ***. Hard to handle, transport, store and dispose of.

Agreed. 8' lamps are a PITA.

My stance is if you have to rewire/replace components, there is no real advantage to leaving the existing fixture housing in place... Just $0.02.

What is your mounting height? That is a factor in choosing a replacement lamp/fixture.

If you read closely, this is nothing but a standard bi-pin 8ft led replacement tube with adapters on the ends to convert it to fit the HO sockets. We've got some T12HO fixtures in the office area of our shop, and I've checked into replacement bypass type HO tubes. Most of what's out there are actually replacements for standard 75 watt tubes with ends to fit the HO tombstones. Some of the peddlers of these tubes make somewhat outlandish and likely dishonest claims of light output, such as 6600 lumens for a 44 watt tube. Then, as you read thru the fine print, they attempt to cover themselves from complaints by actually stating that the tubes are "perfect replacements for 75 watt fluorescents" or some similar language. Saw one like this at a cost of about $60/tube including shipping. Like every hot selling new item, you just have to watch out for the inevitable lying thieves that populate the internet.

There are some legitimate HO replacement tubes in the 50-55 watt range with outputs of 5500 to 6000 lumens, but they're upward of $50 each with shipping, even in quantities of a couple dozen or more tubes. Not cheap, but at least their claims are reasonable.

There may be some cheaper ones out there, but I haven't seen them.

IMO -- if the fixtures work .. replace the bulbs. The good replacement LED bulbs are $50.. Personally ... I like the light from the long HO's

$15 a pair at Lowes that work with existing ballast. Various color temps to choose from, brand name bulbs. The two bypass bulbs I bought to test were high buck - $14.95/each at HD. About $9~11 on line.

Because pulling down the fixtures, figuring out new wiring and re-mounting two dozen linkables is a total PITA.

This is all great info guys. I ordered (2) 8' LED to test out. the 6500K was not to my liking so I have pulled down the 8' fixtures and will be replacing them with 4 footers.

Thanks
