8 ft florescent light fixture

I bought three 8ft florescent t8 li fc HF fixtures awhile back. Installed them in the shop but dont have them wired yet. I want to convert them to LED already. I'm having trouble doing the ballast bypass since it's a 8ft but 4 bulb light fixture. (4, 4ft bulbs)

Anyone have a link to some shunted light sockets (I think shunted is correct).

Could I take the middle sockets out and just run 8 ft LED bulbs?

Thanks

Not an answer to your question, but maybe worth looking into.

Costco has LED shoplights on sale for $20 each until the 25th I believe. They seem to have good reviews and are just as bright as my 4 ft fluorescents. I bought 10 of them for my new shop. I'll buy a few more and just outright replace the rest of my old florescent fixtures when the bulbs die.

The only bummer for me is that they are not hard wired, but I will install outlets in the ceiling to take care of that.

Yeah mine will be hard wired. And I already have the 8ft mounted.

I have looked at those before

I don't know what an 8ft florescent t8 li fc HF fixture is. If they have G13 medium bipin lampholders, shunted or unshunted, the lamps on post1 of the best light fixture sticky will work. link in sig below.

62Stepside,
If the fixture is already wired for 4 x 4' bulbs, you shouldn't have to change the sockets, unless they're falling apart. Find a tube that is "double-end" powered and it will work with either type of sockets.
No, you cant just remove the center sockets and install an 8' lamp. The sockets are different between 4' and 8' lamps.
Good luck,

Thanks guys.

I will look for double ended bulbs and figure out the wiring for the fixtures.

Second what cybrdyke says. Test a tombstone for continuity, and go from there as far as rewiring. If they are non-shunted you could wire for single-end power bulbs. I find pricing and selection on single-ended bulbs for now, and double-ended will still work in the same configuration.

Depending on the fixture you could replace the tombstones with whatever flavor as well.

I have some 8 foot 4x 4' fixtures out in the garage that I pulled the balasts out of to run led bulbs in. I don't remember exactly how I wired them, but I can get some pictures for you if that might help you.

I was just going to get some "linkable" 4 footers but home depot had these 8' fixtures on sale for less than $10 each so I grabbed two

can one not cut the plug and 'hard wire'?

That would be awesome if you could get some pictures of how the wiring is!

Well I guess I wired those with the less that will run with or without the ballast so a picture wouldn't be much help. But I did just rewire a 4' light with bulbs that only take power from end.

In the 8' fixture you need to run your hot wire to the inside 4 sockets, and neutral to the 4 sockets on the far ends of using a bulb that takes power from both ends, and if it is a single ended bulb you need to run a hot and a neutral to each one of the inner four sockets individually

Here are my lights.. how they are wired.. black and white going into the ballast. Red and blue are both hot after the ballast.

Red and blue going into center holders.

Yellow on both outsides

I'm assuming cut red and blue wires from ballast and wire nut white with red and black with blue? And do double ended lights?f3748ebfb0a5ccb3a665ebd79b35e9a8.jpg5a3361c2696902cfb75277f24b824fcf.jpg56207398fd0af4a1fc8e7e9627d9f573.jpg20d668d25917d812f17740a22a1d2a89.jpg356d9087fd53233c50477911fb2813a0.jpg

No. Cut the two yellows and wire nut them to white. That will make all four end sockets connected to neutral. Cut two reds and two blues and wire nut them to black. That will make all four center sockets connected to hot. Then install double-end powered LED tubes.

They can be had at home deopt, menards, Lowe's ect for about the same price. I think I picked up a case of 12 for just under $10 a bulb.

62stepside - Like I said before - See post 1 of best light fixture sticky for more lamp options. link in sig below. GreenTek and GLLUSA are universal double end and single end bypass.

I'm using drop in bulbs - not interested in sourcing 112 tombstones and retro fitting 14 fixtures. The drop ins work just fine.

Falcon67 - I'd still go with the GLLUSA or GreenTek bulbs. You can start out using them as drop-ins since they are ballast compatible. Then when the ballast dies, rewire power to the lamp holders for ballast bypass operation. No sockets to change since they can be used with either shunted or non-shunted tombstones supporting both double or single end wiring respectively.

Be careful about the Costco lights I put 8 in my shop 2 years ago 1 went bad and that model is NLA from fiet so now I'm replacing all 8 of them just an FYI
